An Embodied View on Collaboration in Early Childhood Education
This paper has a twofold aim. The first is to report a qualitative study exploring the construction of collaborative interactions between typically developing children and children with intellectual disabilities in early childhood education, shifting from a cognitivist toward an embodied account of social cognition. The study combined microanalysis of embodied engagements and a phenomenological method of systematic introspective analysis of exper…
Learning to care on one's own
Caring as a girl
This study explores how feminist new materialisms, particularly Karen Barad’s agential realism (2007), reorient the ontoepistemological conception of the phenomena of gendered care. Recuperating girls’ voices, it delves into how materiality, corporeality, and emotion intra-act in the entanglement of the girl-learning-how-to-care within the family in Finland. The study involved ten Finnish girls aged 6-12. A post-humanist Baradian approach guided …
Embodied learning in teacher education
This study examines how integrating perceptual, sensorimotor, and reflective processes supports the learning of enactive cognition theory, demonstrating how student-teachers develop competencies for engaging with theory through lived, embodied experiences. We employed between-methods data triangulation, combining the PRISMA method, microgenetic, and thematic analysis of video and text data, revealing students' experiences. Findings describe how c…
To help each other and to be together
This study investigated how Finnish, Taiwanese, and U.S. children ( N = 66; 6-8 years) conceptualized and experienced care. Thematic analysis revealed that children across cultures associate care with (1) helping others and (2) being together. Culture impacted whether care involved helping the vulnerable, being kind, nice, and helpful, being able to call for help, accompanying others, playing with and letting one play, and respecting personal spa…
Learning and teaching care within the family
The present study investigated how caregivers in Finland and the US recount learning and teaching care within the family, drawing on a new educational-psychological framework for care. This study applied thematic analysis to seven focus groups in the US and five focus groups in Finland composed of caregivers ( N = 45). The results suggest one main theme for learning, Imperfect Mirroring of Past Parenting and Present Parenting Practice, and two th…
Children’s Sociability in Institutional Contexts
Human beings are constituted through the presence and actions of others whom they encounter during the course of their lives. We are constituted by all the interactions we enact in different social contexts and through all the meanings we create together about the experiences we share. Therefore, in order to understand the ontogenesis of cognition, one must understand how meanings are constructed with the others we encounter. A substantial amount…

In the present study, learning in school was studied from the students’ perspectives in two different national contexts. The aim was to explore students’ learning experiences in school by identifying what are the core elements of learning for secondary school students. We conducted the study with a qualitative approach in which photos taken by the students during their school routines were used to elicit group discussion about how learning is exp…
