  • Economic growth, current account dynamics, and growth regimes in the Baltic states

    Karsten Stæhr•ARTICLE•Journal of Baltic Studies•2025•References: 36

This article considers the growth performance of the Baltic states from the mid-1990s to 2021. Economic growth was rapid before the global financial crisis but slowed markedly after the crisis. Panel data estimations using seemingly unrelated regressions suggest that the dynamics of the current account balance are important for short and medium-term growth in the Baltic states but that there is a break signifying a change of short-term growth reg…

    Open Access•Hubert Gabrisch, Karsten Stæhr•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 38

This article uses Granger causality tests to assess the short‐term linkages between changes in relative unit labour costs and changes in the current account balance for the period 1995–2011. The main finding is that c…

  • The Maastricht Inflation Criterion

Open Access•John Lewis, Karsten Stæhr•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2010•Cited by: 2

According to the Maastricht Treaty, a country seeking to join the European Monetary Union cannot have an inflation rate in excess of 1.5 per cent plus the average inflation rates in the three ‘best performing’ EU countries. This inflation reference value is a non‐increasing function of the number of EU members. A counterfactual analysis of historical data shows that the effect of enlarging the EU from 15 to 27 countries was sizeable in 2002–04 an…
