  • Coordinating uncertainty in the political economy of cyber threat intelligence

Open Access•Rebecca Slayton, Lilly Pijnenburg Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2025•References: 13

Cyber threat intelligence firms play a powerful role in producing knowledge, uncertainty, and ignorance about threats to organizations and governments globally. Drawing on historical and ethnographic methods, we show how cyber threat intelligence analysts navigate distinctive types of uncertainty as they transform digital traces into marketable products and services. We make two related contributions and arguments. First, building on STS research…

  • Cybersecurity in practice

    Open Access•Lilly Pijnenburg Muller•ARTICLE•European Journal of International…•2024•Cited by: 1

In this article, I critically examine the ‘Cyber Kill Chain’, a methodological framework for thought and action that shapes both contemporary cybersecurity practice and the discursive construction of security threats. The history and epistemology of the Cyber Kill Chain provide unique insight into the practice of contemporary cybersecurity, insofar as the Kill Chain provides cybersecurity practitioners with predetermined categories and indicators…

  • (Not) Accessing the Castle

Open Access•Lilly Pijnenburg Muller, Natalie Welfens•ARTICLE•Secrecy and Society•2023

This article discusses how to deal with secrecy and limited access in ethnographically inspired research of security fields. Drawing inspiration from recent debates about secrecy in Critical Security Research and from Franz Kafka’s The Castle, we propose to treat access limitations and the secrecy we encounter as methodological tools that provide insights into social relations and power structures of security fields. We develop the argument in tw…

  • What Can a Critical Cybersecurity Do

    Open Access•Andrew C Dwyer, Clare Stevens et al.•ARTICLE•International Political Sociology•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 66

Cybersecurity has attracted significant political, social, and technological attention as contemporary societies have become increasingly reliant on computation. Today, at least within the Global North, there is an ever-pressing and omnipresent threat of the next 'cyber-attack' or the emergence of a new vulnerability in highly interconnected supply chains. However, such discursive positioning of threat and its resolution has typically reinforced,…

  • Inn i gråsonen

    Open Access•Lilly Pijnenburg Muller•ARTICLE•Internasjonal politikk•2019•References: 3

    Open Access•Lilly Pijnenburg Muller•ARTICLE•Internasjonal politikk•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 2
