Anti-conspiracism as anti-populism under La République En Marche! (2020–2022)
This article deals with the under-explored phenomenon of anti-conspiracism and its proximity with anti-populism. Based on the observation that populism and conspiracism share some similar characteristics, the research argues that the opposition to conspiracy theories is sometimes a means of anti-populists to frame anti-system discourses and anti-establishment attitudes as deviant, irrational and potentially criminal. Taking the case of France, es…
Anti-populism and the Trump trauma in US foreign policy
In challenging normal patterns of foreign policy legitimation and undermining the internationalist consensus in favour of liberal hegemony, Donald Trump's populism constituted a political trauma for the foreign policy establishment (FPE) of the United States. How did the FPE respond? Based on a discursive approach and using the methodology of qualitative frame analysis, we examine the anti-populist response to the Trump trauma on the part of the …
A “stylistic anti-populism
This article analyzes the Italian movement of the Sardines that emerged in November 2019 as a reaction to the Lega, the radical right populist party led by Matteo Salvini. On the one hand, it shows that the movement was born out of the incapacity of Italian political parties to articulate an anti-populist response. On the other hand, it demonstrates that the movement was an expression of stylistic anti-populism. As such, the role of the Sardines …
Anti-populism during the Yellow Vest protests
This article analyses the anti-populist strategy of La République en marche! (LREM) during the Yellow Vest protests by comparing it with the one used against the Rassemblement National (RN), France’s main populist party. It argues that while the political elites of LREM have ostracised and strongly demonised the RN to contain its progression, their reaction to the populist protest movement was more balanced and cautious. As they were facing ordin…
Enhancing elite autonomy
This article explores the relationship between cultural policy and democratization by taking post-authoritarian Chile as a case study. It argues that culture was one of the more marginal and alternative policy areas that could favor democratization in the country by increasing what the author calls ‘elite autonomy’. This new concept theorizes that in a democracy obstructed by the heritage of the dictatorship, culture could help democratic elites …
Gustavo A. Flores-Macías, After Neoliberalism ? The Left and Economic Reforms in Latin America
