Gendering internal colonialism
This article explores reproductive violence against China’s internally colonized Uyghurs through the lens of reproductive justice developed by women of color in the United States (US). Reproductive justice includes the right to birth and raise children. We follow Sara Salem’s example of engaging “Western” theories in “non-Western” spaces of diaspora Uyghurs’ digital testimonies from the Uyghur Tribunal based in the United Kingdom (2020–2021). We …
An Intersectional Feminist Critique of Cyberlibertarian’s Grip on the Construction of Online Freedom
The impacts of online hate speech include emotional and embodied harms that have sometimes stunted careers, resulted in lost wages and missed job opportunities, and damaged relationships (both personal and professional). Despite the real-world negative impacts of digital hate speech, many resist regulations that would mitigate these harms. What is behind the anti-regulatory stance against preventative measures to reduce online hate speech? We arg…

Women, peace and security
Since its launch in 2000, the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) and resulting WPS agenda are widely used by intergovernmental, governmental, and civil society actors to advance women's participation in peace and security matters. This paper investigates WPS-cyber sphere connections to uncover the implications for the WPS agenda in the digital realm. We ask: How can digital information and …
A feminist cybersecurity
This article draws on feminist security studies (FSS) to construct a more inclusive cybersecurity. We ask: What can a gendered lens do for cybersecurity? Methodologically, this exploratory piece brings FSS insights to bear on studies in cybersecurity (both traditional and critical) to better conceptualize the risks and benefits embedded in the cybersphere, as well as the role of gender in cyberspace. We propose incorporating a gendered lens (an i…
Disrupting the Saviour Politics in the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in the Global South
Saviour politics permeates some understandings of global gender norms by those who construct the Global North as the origin of global gender norms, and less attention is given to how saviour politics functions within the Global South, wielded by some privileged women against grassroots women. We argue that grassroots Global South women, despite their marginalisation, are global gender norms actors and deserve greater decision-making power on the …
Rethinking women, peace, and security through the localization of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 & National Action Plans
Navigating Area Studies
In this collaborative article, we – Anwar Mhajne and Crystal Whetstone – investigate our positionalities in diverse area studies through a critical reflection on our experiences as political science graduate students conducting fieldwork for our dissertations. We work across different area studies – the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and South Asia and Latin America – mainly as an insider (Mhajne) or simply as an outsider (Whetstone). Taking…
Women, Peace, and Security and Increasing Gendered Risk in the Era of Covid-19
This article analyzes the effects of COVID-19 on women and girls. It examines policy responses to the pandemic crisis and its implications on the women, peace, and security (WPS) agenda in postwar Nepal and Sri Lanka. Building on our previous work in Nepal and Sri Lanka, we rely on secondary studies, news sources, and governmental and nongovernmental organization reports and social media from March 2020 through March 2022 to demonstrate our argum…
Recreating the Third World Project
In this paper, we make a theoretical argument that the Third World be returned to its political origins to inspire an updated Third World Project (TWP), revived as a global movement for progressive, anti-imperialist forces, through the Fourth World movement, which highlights internal colonialism. Both the TWP and the United Nations recognise only nation states as full members. We examine how a Third World strategy that brings in the Fourth World,…
Partnering with insiders
Within community-engaged research, education and social care, peer models that partner with local "insiders" are increasingly common. Peer models are composed of insider "lay" community members who often share similarities or background with a project's target population. Peers are not academically trained, but work alongside researchers and professionals to carry out specific tasks within a project, or in the truest sense of partnership, peers c…
The use of political motherhood in Egypt’s Arab Spring uprising and aftermath
Political motherhood, which uses traditional motherhood to mobilize and sustain women’s political participation, is understudied in political science. Women played a significant role in Egypt’s Arab Spring and its aftermath by “bargaining with patriarchy” and strategically using traditional motherhood to access the political sphere. In this article, we develop a theoretical argument based on the work of Gentry, Carreon and Moghadam and Amar. We i…
