  • Polling ‘misses’ – can Q-methodology help? A case study of the Seanad referendum

    Vanessa Liston, Clodagh Harris•ARTICLE•Irish Political Studies•2018•References: 15

Accurate information on public opinion is a necessary condition for the effective functioning of democracies. For Lasswell, the open interplay of public opinion with policy is the ‘distinguishing mark of popular rule’ [Lasswell, H. D. (1941). Democracy through public opinion. Menasha, WI: Banta]. Yet, despite its importance, there is a distinct gap in methods and tools to understand large volumes of public opinion statements on any issue. The 201…

  • A Case for a Deliberative Link in the Representation Process

    Vanessa Liston•ARTICLE•Representation•2016•References: 46

This paper proposes a deliberative link in the representation cycle. The deliberative link supports the articulation of social discourses; preferences transformation and the expression of citizens' judgemental agency. To outline the case, I begin by examining the limitations of congruence theory as a framework for conceptualising the representative system. I then argue for a deliberative link based on the concept of discursive representation put …

  • Microcosms of Democracy? A Study of the Internal Governance of International NGOs in Kenya1

    Vanessa Liston•ARTICLE•Journal of Civil Society•2009•References: 31

An assumption prevails within the international development community that direct exposure to democracy within civil society is a necessary condition for democratic political culture and hence democratic consolidation. International non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are considered key players in providing this direct exposure through the associational opportunities they provide and the democratic values they espouse. Yet, there is little empi…

  • Explaining Activism Amongst Fine Gael Members

Michael Gallagher, Vanessa Liston et al.•ARTICLE•Irish Political Studies•2002•Cited by: 11

In the 1990s Seyd and Whiteley devised a 'general incentives theory' to explain variation in levels of activism among members of political parties. The theory takes into account individual members' assessments of a variety of potential costs and potential benefits that might result from activism. The model performs reasonably well on data derived from British party members. In this article it is tested on data from members of Fine Gael, the secon…
