Quality Assurance of a "Booster Program" for Gender Equity in the Academia: From Vision to Practice
Even as the 21st century unfolds, it is well recognized that women in the academic world struggle more to secure research funding and are still largely underrepresented at the level of full professorship, the highest post possible within universities and colleges. To rectify this gender-based inequality, a mid-sized academic college initiated an original program named "Booster" aiming for it to provide the optimal framework for creating a nurturi…
Disparities on the Basis of Nationality, Ethnicity, and gender in Road Accident Compensation in Israel
This study documents disparities on the basis of nationality, ethnicity, and gender in court awards regarding the loss of future earnings in road accident cases in Israel. We analyze a random selection of 236 court decisions in road accident cases that reached final decisions on their merits between 1978 and 2018 in which the nationality, ethnicity, and gender of victims were identifiable (via first and last names). We show that, although in Isra…
Femicide, Criminology and the Law
This book offers an interdisciplinary perspective on femicide, using Israel as an illuminating case study, given its diverse communities and common-law-based legal system. Utilizing analytical alongside practical perspectives, the book offers a novel crimino-legal approach to femicide. In addition to its interdisciplinary novelty, the book presents originality in going beyond the more usual focus on the central victims and the common legal tools.…
Place Making' and 'Place Attachment' as Key Concepts in Understanding and Confronting Contemporary Urban Evictions: The Case of Givat-Amal, Tel Aviv
This article expands on the usability of the concepts of 'place making' and 'place attachment' as recently developed in urban studies research in the context of housing insecurity of marginalized communities in today's neo-liberal city. Particularly, against the growing threat of urban evictions, the article utilizes a transdisciplinary approach, showing the relevance of both concepts for (a) a better understanding of bottom-up processes of spati…
The Perfect Murder’: An Exploratory Study of Staged Murder Scenes and Concealed Femicide
Presenting cases of criminologically unidentifiable circumstances, authors point to concealment susceptibility of some femicide cases, overlooked by both the criminal system and by scholars, rendering them ‘concealed femicides’. The paper presents descriptive and criminological analyses of Israeli cases whereby the woman’s murder was followed by scene staging. It extrapolates the common characteristics of femicide victims and perpetrators, offers…
A Woman of Valor Goes to Court: Tort Law as an Instrument of Social Change under Multiculturalism
Can liberal legal tools appeal to non-liberal communities in settling their internal disputes? Are different legal routes for pursuing human rights instrumental in facilitating such usage? This article seeks to answer these questions by using the Israeli test case of the ‘Immanuel affair’. In this case, a segment of the ultra-Orthodox populace resorted to the secular legal system, seeking relief for the discrimination in education it had suffered…
Differences Between Men’s and Women’s Monetary Valuation of Crime Avoidance Behavior
In this article, we focus on the monetary value of the “female fear,” namely, women’s precautionary and avoidance behaviors, which they use to protect themselves against crimes and compare it with the monetary value of similar behaviors taken by men. Using scenario questionnaires that allude to the risks of being alone in dark surroundings, we tested the willingness of men and women to pay for what is perceived as a means for reducing the potenti…
Dummy Article Title
The extent to which English law remedies injury to autonomy (ITA) as a stand-alone actionable damage in negligence is disputed. In this article I argue that the remedy available is not only partial and inconsistent (Keren-Paz in Med Law Rev, 2018) but also gendered and discriminatory against women. I first situate the argument within the broader feminist critique of tort law as failing to appropriately remedy gendered harms, and of law more broad…
