Using the case of Givat Amal, a forcibly evicted neighbourhood in Tel Aviv, the article traces close to eight decades of infrastructural neglect by municipal authorities in the name of urban renewal.     Aim. This paper examines the meaning of The Tower of Babel (1563), Pieter Bruegel’s painting, as a physical, cultural, social, and architectural herald of the modern skyscraper.
