  • On Perils and Privileges of Native Anthropology in Pakistan

    Open Access•Abdul Qadar•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian and African…•2025•References: 23

This paper problematizes nativeness of a Pakistani anthropologist originating from reflection on meanings of the term 'native,' against certain other key determinants of anthropological fieldwork like, 'field', 'self' and 'representation in writing'. Methodologically, the paper contextualizes self of a Punjabi anthropologist at his native village while comparing historically enacted self at another Punjabi village where an American anthropologist…

  • Choosing between energy and ecologies of health

Open Access•Komal Niazi, Muhammad Shoaib et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2024

Environmental crises, precipitated by a globally dominant model of developmentalism, have changed the lives of less visible communities in geographical peripheries. This study draws on our participant observation of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in general as a massive infrastructural development project and the Qadirabad coal power plant as one of many CPEC projects where developmentalism and local lives intersect with each other. …

  • From Sainthood to Saintly Kinship

Open Access•Abdul Qadar, Arslan Waheed•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian and African…•2024•References: 24

This article problematises 'sainthood' as a sacred spiritual construct by the understanding and appropriation of the same. We have examined claims of Chishti and Dhuddi biraderies (endogamous kinship groups) as spiritually elevated and socially superior groups based on our recent fieldwork in three villages in the district of Vehari, Punjab. We take a case study of Chishti biraderi' s claims of spiritual ascendency because of their descendance fr…

  • Traditional Hierarchies of Zamindars and Kammis in Pakistani Punjab

    Open Access•Abdul Qadar, Arslan Waheed•ARTICLE•South Asia Research•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 15

This article challenges the traditional understanding of the role of landownership in rural Punjab in the context of recent socio-economic restructuring of Pakistani society. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork of contemporary practices of gift exchange ( vartan bhanji) in a village, we argue that the Kammi biraderis, once considered lower class, now assert their elevated socio-economic status through vartan bhanji on important social occas…

  • Utopia of social distancing and dystopia of living in slums

Arslan Waheed, Abdul Qadar et al.•ARTICLE•Local Environment•2022

Social distancing has contributed enormously to controlling the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. From Latin America to East Asia and Africa, the majority of the urban dwellers are living in congested, ignored and criminalised squatter settlements with meagre resources restricting them to exercise social distancing. Stretching boundaries of the theory of planned behaviour, this article discusses how the utopia of social distancing interacts with t…

Open Access•Abdul Qadar, Muhammad Rahman et al.•ARTICLE•University of Chitral Journal of…•2020

Needs Analysis in the context of language-learning-teaching is an important process to design a certain course and syllabus. It helps course designers to set objectives, choose content, method of instruction, appropriate teaching aids, and classroom activities for different courses. • Religious populism in Pakistani Punjab

Open Access•Ahmad Sabat, Muhammad Shoaib et al.•ARTICLE•International Area Studies Review•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Khadim Rizvi’s open manifestation of religion helped him become one of the most popular leaders of Barelvi-Sunni Muslims in Pakistani Punjab. He emerged as the leader of a moral community during a crisis. After a series of protests and negotiated agreements with the federal and provincial governments, he was able to translate his support into electoral power. In the 2018 election, his TLP bagged 1.8 million votes (National Assembly seats) from Pu…
