Construction Grammar as a framework
In this paper, we discuss the prevalent diversity of constructionist approaches in relation to the idea of Construction Grammar as a coherent field of linguistic study. We do so, based on the views of about 190 constructionist researchers, as expressed in a questionnaire in 2021. While the responses show both variety and agreement, the main dividers appear to be whether all constructionist approaches are usage-based, on the one hand, and the stan…
The Cambridge Handbook of Construction Grammar
Construction Grammar is one of the fastest-growing branches of functional syntax. Bringing together an international team of scholars, this handbook provides a complete overview of the current issues and applications in this approach. Divided into six thematic parts, it covers the fundamental notions of Construction Grammar, its conceptual origins and the basic ideas that unite its various branches, its solid empirical grounding and affinities wi…
Frame-based semantic patterns in business discourse: A case study
Texas German
Towards a Roadmap for Exploring Texas German Voices
Our interdisciplinary article provides an overview of the breadth and variety of primary sources available to scholars studying Texas German history, culture, and language. We seek to (re)open an interdisciplinary dialogue and inspire future research. As we explore how linguists and historians can fruitfully work together, we take Texas German-Indigenous relations as our case study, showcasing the evolving use and associations of the term Indiane…
FrameNet at 25: Results and Applications
This paper, a follow-up to Boas/Ruppenhofer/Baker (2024), reports on the results and applications of the FrameNet database. It spells out how FrameNet data have been used in linguistic theory, computational linguistics, multilingual lexicography, and foreign language teaching and learning. The paper also provides more information about the organization of the FrameNet project, inlcuding organizational, financial, and personal challenges
Constructionist views on Construction Grammar
The Pedagogical Tipiṭaka: OER & the Three Baskets of Ancient Language Instruction
Ancient languages present a unique teaching challenge: for spoken languages, common pedagogy recommends engaging students via dialogue; for ancient languages, no speakers survive with whom to practise. This paper highlights how the Linguistics Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin has approached this challenge by creating the Early Indo-European OnLine (EIEOL) collection, an online educational resource whose lesson series present e…
FrameNet at 25
The launch of the FrameNet project in 1997 was both a crystallisation point of decades worth of theoretical investigations into lexical meaning by Charles J. Fillmore and colleagues, as well as the seed of an ongoing line of corpus-based and computational research that seeks to implement Fillmore’s theory of Frame Semantics in a way that both provides an interesting model relevant for further theorising and also is applicable practically for sema…
Directions for Pedagogical Construction Grammar: Learning and Teaching (with) Constructions
How can insights from Construction Grammar (CxG) be applied to foreign language learning (FLL) and foreign language teaching (FLT)? This volume explores several aspects of Pedagogical Construction Grammar, with a specific look at issues relevant to second language acquisition, FLL, and FLT. The contributions in this volume discuss a wide range of constructions, as well as different resources, methodologies, and data used to learn constructions in…

Framing constructicography
Constructicography can be defined as a blend between Construction Grammar and Practical Lexicography, which aims at developing constructicons: repositories of form and function pairings in a language. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of this emerging field by (i) tracking the origins of both Frame Semantics and Construction Grammar and the repercussions of their intertwined developments to Computational Lexicography and Construc…
Approaching German syntax from a constructionist perspective
Constructional Approaches to Syntactic Structures in German
From the past into the present: From case frames to semantic frames
This paper first shows how Frame Semantics grew out of earlier work on Case Grammar. Then, it discusses some of the basic principles of Frame Semantics and shows how these have been implemented in FrameNet, an online corpus-based lexicographic database (http://framenet.icsi.berkeley.edu). Using semantic frames to structure the lexicon of English, FrameNet provides a wealth of information showing how frame elements (situation-specific semantic rol…
Kerngrammatik beschranken (Ch…
Lexical and phrasal approaches to argument structure: Two sides of the same coin
Muller and Wechsler (MW Tomasello, 2003; Goldberg and Jackendoff, 2004; Jackendoff, 2011) that grammars should contain a phrasal component for certain constructions, such as the N-P-N construction” (MW (2) According to MW1 and (3) It also allows for some arguments to be expressed locally while saving others for expression elsewhere (partial fronting) and for the coordination of two or more verbs with matching argument structures (M&W, p. 2). The …
Coercion and leaking argument structures in Construction Grammar
This article investigates the role of coercion and contextual background information in influencing acceptability judgments. Focusing on data from English resultative constructions I propose a usage-based constructional approach that accounts for the factors that allow for a verb's conventionalized argument structure specifications to leak, thereby allowing otherwise unacceptable nonconventionalized utterances such as ??Ed hammered the metal safe…
The Texas German Dialect Archive: A Multimedia Resource for Research, Teaching, and Outreach
This paper describes the organization of the Texas German Dialect Project (TGDP), which aims to document and archive the remnants of Texas German. The mission of the TGDP is (a) to document Texas German as it reflects the rich cultural and linguistic traditions of its residents; (b) to gather basic research information about linguistic diversity; (c) to provide linguistic information for public and educational interests, and (d) to use the collec…

Determining the productivity of resultatives: A reply to Goldberg and Jackendoff
Determining the productivity of resultatives: A reply to Goldberg and Jackendoff* Hans C. Boas 1. Introduction Goldberg and Jackendoff (2004) present an analysis of English resultative constructions which incorporates corpus data presented in Boas 2003. While Goldberg and Jackendoff (henceforth G&J) offer an interesting account, their article has a number of problems that I believe need clarification in order to avoid any misconceptions that read…
Semantic Frames as Interlingual Representations for Multilingual Lexical Databases
This paper presents a novel approach to constructing multilingual lexical databases using semantic frames. Starting with the conceptual information contained in the English FrameNet database, we propose a corpus-based procedure for producing parallel lexicon fragments for Spanish, German, and Japanese, which mirror the English entries in breadth and depth. The resulting lexicon fragments are linked to each other via semantic frames, which functio…
Tracing Dialect Death: The Texas German Dialect Project
This paper reports on current efforts of the Texas German Dialect Project to record, archive, and analyze the remnants of the rapidly eroding Texas German dialect spoken in central Texas
