Exploring the Paradox
This article examines the impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on employment outcomes for women across thirty developing countries in Asia and Africa, utilizing IPUMS-DHS data from 2003–18. The probit model revealed that experiencing IPV – less severe (β: 0.115, P < 0.000), severe (β: 0.200, P < 0.000), emotional (β: 0.140, P < 0.000), and sexual violence (β: 0.140, P < 0.000) – significantly increases women’s labor force participation. In c…

Consanguineous Marriages and Domestic Violence against Women
The high prevalence of cousin marriages in the patriarchal Pakistani society presents a unique setting to study the impact of consanguinity on domestic violence. Our study investigates the relationship between consanguineous marriages and domestic violence against women, using econometric models and the Pakistan Demographic and Health Surveys (2012 and 2017-2018). The findings reveal a grim picture of domestic violence, with 6.5% of women experie…
Behavioral insights into reusable bag adoption
Reusable bags have been introduced as an alternative to single-use plastic bags (SUPB). While beneficial, this alternative is economically and environmentally viable only if utilized multiple times. This study aims to identify the determinants influencing the use of reusable bags (RB) over single-use plastic bags (SUPB) within the framework of ecological impact reduction, employing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The focus is on understandi…
Unchecked single-use persistence
Islamabad’s 2019 ban on single-use plastic shopping bags aimed to reduce plastic waste, but compliance is limited. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the ban as well as other factors in curtailing plastic bag use in Islamabad. Regression modeling within a rational choice framework analyzed survey data from 406 retailers across 18 selected urban and rural markets. We found that the subjective belief that a fine was unlikely (β = −16.10; t =…
Relationship between asset ownership and women's empowerment? Evidence from DHS data from 18 developing countries
This study identifies the link between women's asset ownership and women's empowerment. Women's empowerment is measured by their decision-making role related to their health, large household purchases, and their social interaction. Using Demographic and Health Surveys data for 18 countries from South Asia, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa, we found that the women who owned assets were 14% more likely to be empowered compared with the women…
Air pollution and under-5 child mortality
Our findings could serve as a guide for policy development aimed at reducing under-five mortality, ultimately contributing to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs)

Nutritional inequalities among under-five children
We found a significant within and across country variation in stunting, wasting and underweight rates among the under-five children's population. The geospatial analysis also suggested that stunting, wasting, and underweight patterns exhibit clear regional patterns, underscoring the need for coordinated interventions at the regional level
Size, Correlates and Consumption Patterns of the Middle Class
Using three definitions of the middle class (MC) and the Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement surveys from 2004 to 2014, we estimated the size of the MC and examined the correlates and consumption patterns of the MC for Pakistan. According to the absolute income, relative income and asset-ownership definitions, the MC grew by 16%, 8%, and 10%, respectively, from 2004 to 2014. The results of the biprobit model showed that the probabili…
Exploring the Relationship Between Maternal Occupation and Under-Five Mortality
Poverty as Functioning Deprivation
Poverty alleviation and eradication have always remained a major challenge for the political leadership at the national and international level. However, no consensus exists about the definition and measurement of poverty. Recent understanding sees poverty as much more than lack of income. Hunger, unemployment and ill heath are just some of many dimensions of poverty. We have contributed to the existing debate by defining poverty as a deprivation…
Failures of the “Invisible Hand”
Despite many failures of the invisible hand both empirically and theoretically, it continues to be vigorously asserted and widely believed. We document the failures and explain why it continues to be asserted despite these failures
Maqāṣid Al-Sharīʿah
Islam takes a broad and encompassing view of human development and asserts the centrality of achieving the Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah in all human activities. The existing development indices do not completely conform to the normative judgments of Islam regarding the concept of development especially because of their disproportionate emphasis on the material aspect of the development and their disregard for the dimensions which are crucial for the world…
