  • Wealth and Weight

    Open Access•Ignacio Amate-Fortes, Almudena Guarnido-Rueda et al.•ARTICLE•European Review•2025•References: 3

This study analyses the evolution of body mass index (BMI) as income increases across the population, controlling for age, sex, educational level, marital status and some lifestyle habits. To this end, a quantile regression, an econometric technique that readjusts the weights of the variables in each quantile to minimize deviations, has been carried out, where the variable that orders the sample is income. We use 316,777 observations from the Eur…

Considered the epidemic of the 21st century by the WHO, obesity is a global problem that is on the rise and will continue to increase in the coming years. Spain and Andalusia, in particular, are no exception to this pathology, which has tripled since the 1970s, representing a public health challenge. This article analyses the self-perceived health of the population surveyed by the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS), with 316,277 observations. The main novelties of this research are: first, we use the econometric technique of quantile regression, which will allow us to distinguish the respondent’s income level. Second, the personal, social, lifestyle and macroeconomic context dimensions of the respondents are considered simultaneously as …

  • Income inequality and Covid-19 in the USA

    Open Access•Ignacio Amate-Fortes, Almudena Guarnido-Rueda et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2023

This study aimed to analyze the effects of inequality in income distribution, gender, race and education on incidence and mortality rates of COVID-19 in the USA. For this purpose, a cross-sectional model was estimated for a sample of 2805 US counties. The results obtained allow us to conclude that inequality in all its aspects posed a risk factor for incidence rate and, particularly, for mortality from COVID-19. Other results obtained show that a…

  • Are European social spending policies effective in the fight against gender inequality

    Ignacio Amate-Fortes, Almudena Guarnido-Rueda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary European…•2023•References: 16

The aim of this paper is to analyse the factors that influence a greater or lesser decrease in gender inequality, paying special attention to the role of social policy. To this end, a measure of inequality in the distribution of income between men and women has been developed and a panel of data has been estimated for 33 European countries and a time period of 15 years. The results show that income inequality in general, as measured by the Gini i…

    Open Access•Diego Martínez-Navarro, Ignacio Amate-Fortes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian and African…•2022•References: 56

The purpose of this article is to study empirically whether the Kuznets' curve hypothesis on inequality and development is present in the economies located in Africa, as well as whether there is a minimum income for this hypothesis to begin to be fulfilled. In order to study this question, a panel of data from 45 countries is available for the period 1975-2019, and these data are analysed through a graphical point of view and through an econometr…
