Three Faces of the State in Local Cyberspace Administrations
How does the Chinese party-state address the diverse and often conflicting challenges of internet governance? This study examines this question by analyzing the institutional design of municipal cyberspace administrations (MCAs), a key yet understudied group of local state actors. It brings together three often siloed state frameworks—the developmental state, the regulatory state, and the surveillance state—to theorize the roles MCAs are tasked w…
The developmental party and the regulatory state in China's Internet governance
China's approach to Internet governance is increasingly perceived as a Party‐centric model, aligning the state under the Chinese Communist Party's (the Party) leadership. The division of labor between the Party and the state in the context of political centralization and Party centrality remains unclear. This study aims to address this knowledge gap by examining the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), a central player in Internet governance…
Dancing with Diversity
Rapid market transition in post-reform China has created various socioeconomic spaces that fall beyond the Leninist mode of control by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and thus constitutes a formidable challenge to its ruling capacity. This article examines the evolving adaptations of the CCP and the rise of a new form of Party-society nexus in urban China. We found that Party organisers have been fostering a spatial strategy in the context of …
The Politics of Policy Reformulation
How do Chinese provincial governments reformulate the general central policies into implementable local policy outputs? How does this vary across provinces? Despite considerable research on policy implementation in China, strategies of policy reformulation remain understudied. To better understand these strategies, this article proposes a four-scenario typology: an innovative strategy, a defensive strategy, a conservative strategy, and a perfunct…
Preserving spontaneous order
How and to what extent can community be imaged as a spontaneous order? Is the spontaneous social order dichotomous or oppositional to state power? Despite vigorous scholarship and policy debate, the theorization of the community has not attended adequately to the ways in which interactional order emerges in various sociopolitical contexts. Reflecting the experience of community building in post-reform urban China, I present an organic statist vis…
Incidence and risk factors of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis among the Chinese population
The cumulative incidence of symptomatic knee OA over 4 years was relatively high, and varied by province and region. Lack of physical activities was confirmed to be risk factors of incident symptomatic knee OA. The presence of heart disease, kidney disease, and digestive disease may be associated with a higher risk of incident symptomatic knee OA, further research need to confirm these findings
Effect of an educational intervention on HPV knowledge and attitudes towards HPV and its vaccines among junior middle school students in Chengdu, China
The baseline level of knowledge on HPV, its vaccines, and cervical cancer was very low among junior middle school students in Chengdu, China. However, the willingness to be vaccinated seemed positive. School-based health education is effective and appropriate in increasing the awareness of HPV and willingness towards its vaccines. Regular health education on HPV and cervical cancer prevention at a shorter interval should be guaranteed to ensure c…

Social Changes and Neighbourhood Policy in Shanghai
This paper cites recent changes of neighbourhood governance in Shanghai to illustrate whether and how social changes and policymaking are related in a transitional context. I show that two decades of rapid social and economic reforms in urban China have weakened the organisational resources for sociopolitical mobilisation. The reforms also create vibrant neighbourhood spaces beyond the reach of the state. To accommodate the disorganised urban fab…
