  • Regional Responses to China’s Maritime Silk Road Initiative in Southeast Asia

    Shaofeng Chen•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2017•Cited by: 4

Southeast Asia has sat atop China’s Maritime Silk Road Initiative (MSRI). By and large, most Southeast Asian countries hailed China’s MSRI, but their responses to it have some variances. The article aims to analyze why they have differing responses. It contends that the primary determinant is changing domestic politics, specifically, ruling elites’ policy priority, degree of trust of China, leaders’ ideology and preference, and social response. Open Access•Kun‐chin Lin, Shaofeng Chen•ARTICLE•Journal of Current Chinese Affairs•2013•References: 18

Through two illustrative case studies of enterprise reform in Henan Province, we examine the underlying political contentions behind the changing roles of local government in the process of the corporatization and asset restructuring of state-owned enterprises (SOE) starting in the late 1990s. As SOEs lose their ability to meet the multitude of resource demands from central and local officials, they become sites of inter-governmental contentions …

  • Marketization and China's energy security

    Open Access•Shiyi Chen, Shaofeng Chen•ARTICLE•Policy and Society•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Marketization of the petroleum industry is part of China's efforts to construct a market economy. This has provided strong incentives for national oil companies (NOCs) to seek their commercial interests. Nevertheless, marketization of this industry is only partial. What impact does the partial marketization have on China's energy security against the backdrop of its growing reliance on foreign energy resources? This paper argues that China is pla…
