Youth volunteering for youth: Who are they serving? How are they being served
Leadership competence and political control: The influential factors
This study considers the impact of social support upon the psychological empowerment of community activists. Although it has been clearly shown that the human and personal resources that individual activists bring to their voluntary activity and the inputs of the agencies and associations in which they are active both contribute to the activists' empowerment, little research has considered the effect of the support given by family, friends, and s…
Sociopolitical control and empowerment: An extended replication
Although much of the empowerment research and literature deals with the individual in his immediate environment, there is clearly a branch that focusses more on the wider community and sociopolitical empowerment. Zimmerman and Zahniser (1991) developed an integrative measure of sociopolitical control containing two indices—Leadership Competence and Political Control, and they reported three tests of their measure. This study reports the use of th…
Can Community Activists Be Taught Their Job
This is a report of the second and final stage of a research project evaluating courses for community activists in Israel. We compared 286 graduates of Schools for Community Activists, of whom 198 were still active in their communities and 98 were not, with 138 activists and 131 non-active residents of the same neighbourhoods who had never participated in courses for activists. We noted no significant socio-economic or demographic differences bet…
Neighbourhood Committee Roles and the Sense of Community
In this study of 93 members of neighbourhood committees, from 31 urban, mainly lower-class neighbourhoods in the greater Tel-Aviv area, the roles played by neighbourhood representative organizations, as seen by organization activists, are examined. These roles are divided into expressive and instrumental, and, following Wandersman (1981), their correlations are examined with environmental factors and personal and participational variables of the …

Two hundred senior community centre staff were asked about their practices and means of client participation. and about the outputs of the community centres: intrinsic, press outputs, extrinsic, goal attainment outputs and economic outputs. It was found that most of the measures of client par…
Schools for community activists: A report of the first decade's experience
This article describes “schools for community activists” held in Israel since 1980 and briefly summarizes a study of 1,070 graduates of these courses. The aims, structure, content, and organization of the courses are described and placed within the context of the limited professional literature on the subject.
Client Participation and the Effectiveness of Community Social Work Intervention
Client participation is a central value of social work, and it is generally assumed that inter vention involving clients will be more effective than that in which they are not involved. This article presents a study in which this assumption was tested empirically by questioning 200 senior workers in Israeli community centers as to the techniques of client participation they used in their work and the outputs in their centers. The assumption that …
