The Soar Model as an Effective Mechanism for University–Community Partnerships to End Homelessness
University social work programs can play a critical role in helping communities to expand local capacity in efforts to end homelessness. The Supplemental Security Income/Social Security Disability Insurance (SSI/SSDI) Outreach, Access and Recovery (SOAR) program is an evidence-based model that social work programs are advancing through university–community partnerships. SOAR seeks to prevent and end homelessness through increased access to Supple…
Mapping Community Capitals: A Potential Tool for Social Work
Concept mapping can be a useful tool in social work practice at all levels. Mapping can help clarify and increase comprehension of abstract concepts, such as community capitals or assets. This paper describes community capitals, presents a simple method for mapping community assets conceptually, and demonstrates this method through two case examples. The cases detail activities of two organizations involved in work with communities. The developme…
Resolving Community Conflict and Problems: Public Deliberation and Sustaining Dialogue , by Lohmann, R. A., & Van Til, J. (Eds.)
In Resolving Community Conflict and Problems: Public Deliberation and Sustained Dialogue, Roger Lohmann and Jon Van Til make a compelling case for integrating public deliberation and sustained dial

Validity of the Faces IV Family Assessment Measure
The Circumplex Model and its accompanying measure, the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES I, II, and III), are considered one of the state-of-the-art family assessment instruments in the field. A number of concerns, however, have been raised about the validity and reliability of the previous FACES measures and their ability to assess the Circumplex Model. Limitations of previous FACES measures have resulted in the developme…

New Directions in Systems Theory: Chaos and Complexity
Systems theory has greatly advanced during the past two decades. Chaos and complexity theory and their accompanying research methods provide a new way to understand systems theory and advance more sophisticated mathematical methods for studying complex human systems. Often termed “nonlinear dynamics” because they seek to understand systems that change in ways that are not amenable to the linear cause and effect models familiar to social scientist…

Research on Social Work and Disasters
Over the past decade, several major natural disasters have had devastating impacts throughout the United States and the world. Since larger populations now live and work on land vulnerable to various hazards, natural disasters can be expected to affect more people each year. As a result, the social work profession soon will be stretched to its limi

Fitting regression models to research questions for analyzing change in nonexperimental research
This article discusses the problems associated with analyzing change in nonexperimental data. Three ordinary least squares regression models are presented and empirically tested to illustrate similarities and differences. Model one, based on raw difference change scores, applies best to studying change processes. Model two, based on outcome scores, applies best to assessing the consequences of change. Model three, based on residualized scores, ap…
Validity of the 3-D Circumplex Model for Family Assessment
The Circumplex Model and its accompanying measure, the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale III (FACES III), have emerged as the state-of-the-artfaimly assessment instrument in the field offamily therapy. A number of concerns, however, have been raised about the validity of the FACES III. In response to these concerns, the FACES III has recently been rescored as a linear measure, and a 3-D Circumplex Model has been developed. Data fr…
Defining and Measuring Social Support: Guidelines for Social Work Practitioners
This article reviews the literature on social support and presents the theoretical foundations and basic concepts of social support. A framework is presented for assessing measures of social support, and eight measures are reviewed using the framework. The framework focuses on basic conceptualizations of social support, the psychometric characteristics of the measures, and their clinical utility. Suggestions are made for both using and improving …
Social Network Analysis
Network analysis is presented as a useful extension of conventional forms of analysis. We introduce and illustrate basic features of network analysis. Reference materials are suggested and data from a network of 80 emergency service organizations are used to illustrate a matrix approach to network analysis. Our discussion shows how network analysis can complement standard modes of analysis to broaden and deepen the application of theories to soci…
Redundancy in Organizational Systems
In this article, I provide a basic introduction to the concepts and theory of redundancy in organizational systems. The roots of redundancy are explored, and four different types of redundancy are identified and discussed. Assumptions underlying both redundant and nonredundant systems are examined. I also review some of the criticisms of redundancy and examine several problems associated with transferring the concepts of redundancy to social syst…
