The life course of domestic violence services
Black women in the United States experience disproportionately high rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) and face significant barriers to accessing culturally congruent services. Ecological theories, such as Bronfenbrenner’s (1994) chronosystem and intersectional frameworks including Black feminist theorists such as Hill Collins’ (2000) matrix of domination and Richie’s (2012) violence matrix, illustrate that Black women’s experiences of inti…
A content analysis of conversation characteristics of online sexual grooming
Additional online context-based grooming strategies that were found could be incorporated into an updated theoretical framework of the grooming process. Parents and children should be informed of the strategies leveraged by online groomers to increase their ability to detect and avoid risky online communication. South Asian Young Adults and Gender Roles
The goals of the researchers who conducted this study were to explore South Asian young adults' ( N = 30) perceptions of gender roles and intimate partner violence (IPV) prevention in South Asian communities in the United States. Three distinct themes (a) gender role socialization and expectations, (b) gender role expression/negotiation within own intimate relationship, family, and own community, and (c) IPV prevention were identified. Important …
Crisis Work Embedded in a Global Crisis

Quality Parenting Initiative
Relationships matter
Quality Parenting Initiative (QPI) is a systems reform approach aimed at strengthening the quality parenting practices of foster parents, and their support by child welfare workers. QPI has been implemented in over 80 jurisdictions across 10 states; however, no external evaluation has informed its development. This study explored perceptions of QPI's impact on the foster parent experience, with a particular focus on foster parent involvement in i…
Intimate Partner Violence in an Orthodox Jewish Community in the United States
This study sought to understand the needs and priorities of the Orthodox Jewish community around intimate partner violence in a medium-sized midwestern city. Twelve Orthodox Jewish rabbis, Rebbetzins, and community members (including survivors) were recruited to participate in in-depth, semistructured interviews. Interviews were analyzed using Dedoose via a mixed content analysis approach. Interviews revealed four themes: (1) Orthodox Gender Norm…

Documenting Behavioral Health Needs in an Urban Setting
Most local communities lack the capacity to conduct behavioral health needs assessments. The purpose of this paper is to describe a mixed-methods approach to estimate the behavioral health needs in St. Louis, MO. Data were drawn from multiple sources including local and state government prevalence estimates, medical records, and key informant interviews. The most prevalent behavioral conditions were depression, alcohol, and drug abuse. Priority p…

IPV and Health Consequences Among CPS-Involved Caregivers
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health dilemma that disproportionately affects minority women in the United States. The present study utilized data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW II) to examine the longitudinal course of IPV outcomes reported by minority women involved with Child Protective Services (CPS). Our findings highlight the heterogeneity of the relationship between IPV and mental or physica…

Previous research on renters’ experiences in the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program is robust, but much of it has been conducted in the context of mobility interventions providing added resources. In contrast, this study focuses on HCV renters’ experiences searching for housing without the support of a mobility intervention. In semistructured interviews, 34 HCV renters describe their housing search processes and outcomes. We find that renters s…
Housing Choices as School Choices
Previous scholarship on the federal Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program has found that HCV renters are less likely than other households living below the poverty line to live in neighborhoods with high–performing schools. These findings are troubling because HCV renters have some choice about where they live, yet aggregate data linking HCV renters’ neighborhoods with school performance shows that renters tend to be concentrated in impoverished a…
Acceptability of a Social Support Intervention for Re-entering Prisoners
A relatively unexplored area of prisoner reentry programs involves actively engaging the prisoner’s naturally occurring social support in the reentry interventions. Most reentering prisoners rely on loved ones for social support, but that support is often fragile. Interventions that strengthen the sustainability of social support are crucial to a successful reentry. This study evaluates the acceptability of a social support intervention for male …
From the Individual to the Community
This paper argues that substance abuse interventions in distressed African-American communities must be culturally-tailored and incorporate a framework targeting changes in both individual behavior and the community. The current study employed Concept Mapping in conjunction with Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) principles to involve 100 community members, substance users, and service providers to examine the role of alcohol and other…
