Spirituality and Religiosity
This study explores the role spirituality plays in selecting social work as a profession among 70 undergraduate students at a small private Christian college and a large state university. Practicum Instruction
Many of the most troublesome student-client relationship problems found in practicum settings can be illuminated by the use of the boundary concept. Practicum instructors who depict the role relationship between the social work student and the client as defined by complex boundaries, can employ a set of behavioral cues to assist in the detection of boundary difficulties. This applied research study is part of a collaborative effort by local government representatives, business leaders, and social work researchers to investigate workplace support for family needs. Student Writing in Social Work
Social work professors are frequently disappointed with the writing their students produce bumt feel unsure about how improvements can be made. Unfortunately, the social work literature does not shed much light on the problem of student writing. Case Outcomes in Domestic Violence Court
Observation of 174 domestic violence cases in a civil court indicated that the only significant factor related to case outcomes was the judge hearing the case. The three judges whose cases were observed differed significantly in their rates of cases dismissed, findings for or against the respondents, and number and types of orders issued. The data suggest the need for more consistent education of judges in regard to domestic violence
Choice of Social Work as a Career
Little is known about why students choose social work for a career. Certain life events in the family of origin may exert a compelling influence, though other factors are certainly involved. This study examines the influence of selected life events and such factors as prior employment, volunteering, and influential persons via a survey of 415 social work students and a comparison group of 203 nonsocial work students. Anxiety Preceding Field Work
Data from this exploratory study suggest that both graduate and undergraduate social work students have high levels of anxiety as they prepare to enter field practicums. A survey of 255 students identified self-doubts, time and stress management concerns, as well as interviewing and counseling related concerns. 640 respondents to a statewide telephone survey were asked if they consider their jobs or occupations to be one of the helping professions. Two-thirds of the respondents answered affirmatively. These data suggest the public does not know the attributes of a profession
