According to data from an American Sociological Association survey, just half of all degree-granting sociology departments in the academic year 2012-2013 offered at least one “distance learning course in sociology” (Spalter-Roth, Van Vooren & Kisielewski, 2013). Two years after this report was released, Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Sociology (VCU SOCY) launched the first online master’s of science degree in digital sociology i…

Judith Bradford, Caitlin Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of GLBT Family Studies•2013

The National Lesbian Health Care Survey (NLHCS) was the first major survey of lesbian and bisexual women's health and mental health, and was conducted in 1984–1985 with 1,927 participants from all U.S. states and several territories. The NLHCS included an open-ended item, about what had prevented respondents from becoming pregnant, that was never transcribed or analyzed, yet that reflected historical trends of that time. The survey was conducted …

We explored health care access experiences of 32 male-to-female (MtF) and 15 female-to-male (FtM) transgender people of different ethnicities in Virginia using data from focus groups conducted in 2004. Victimization associated with social stigmatization played a dominant role in participants' lives, manifested by discrimination; violence; and health care provider insensitivity, hostility, and ignorance of transgender health. Access to transgender…

In 2005 through 2006, 387 self-identified transgender people completed a statewide health needs assessment; 350 who completed eligibility questions were included in this examination of factors associated with experiences of discrimination in health care, employment, …

  • Impact of Social Capital on Employment and Marriage among Low Income Single Mothers

Jennifer A Johnson, Julie A Honnold et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•2011•Cited by: 5

The 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA, P. L. 104-93) called primarily on women to achieve two goals: work and/or marriage. For low income single mothers with limited access to capital, the PRWORA presents a quagmire in that the public safety nets previously guaranteed by the policies of the New Deal were abruptly supplanted by policies with obligations that require various forms of capital. Using…

  • Using Social Network Analysis to Enhance Nonprofit Organizational Research Capacity

    Jennifer A Johnson, Julie A Honnold et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Practice•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 26

As donor agencies become more specific in funding requirements, research that can demonstrate the collaborative efforts of a nonprofit agency with its organizational neighbors and how those efforts pay off in terms of capacity and provision of services is highly useful. Recognizing these benefits, a local funding agency in Virginia commissioned a study to look at the ways in which social network analysis (SNA) can enhance the data resources avail…

This was an exploratory, qualitative study of contextual cultural and social realities of the sexual interactions of a representative sample of African American women of unidentified HIV status. The study expanded our understanding of family and gender role variables by exploring influences of family of origin and idealistic perceptions of roles on sexual relationships. Data was collected on 51 African American women who were recruited through pr…

  • Support for Resource Conservation

    Julie A Honnold, Lynn D Nelson•ARTICLE•Social Problems•1979•Cited by: 1•References: 45

Normative support is created for social movements in a variety of ways. In previous studies of the diffusion of environmentalism, the complexity of this process has not been recognized. By synthesizing Smelser's (1962) collective behavior theory, Olson's (1971) theory of collective action and generalizations from diffusion research, we develop a theoretical model of support for resource conservation which includes socioeconomic status and aspirat…
