In the Company of Strangers
Social interactions among consumers, especially in the consumption of digital goods, have become commonplace in an increasingly interconnected marketplace. As such, understanding the impact of such interactions on consumer behavior carries major academic and practitioner significance. This research focuses on an important but under-researched aspect of social influence and the underlying mechanisms that may be driving peer effects. Using the cont…
Hitting the Target but Missing the Point
Charities often advertise the cost of a given impact (e.g., $5 provides a meal). Though often intended to demonstrate cost-effectiveness, we find that donors also use the cost as a target. Therefore, the impact cost can be too low, reducing donation amounts, or too high, deterring donors from donating altogether. We propose that, whenever donors have a reference point for a reasonable donation, the revenue-maximizing impact cost is at or just bel…

Leveraging Digital Advertising Platforms for Consumer Research
Digital advertising platforms have emerged as a widely utilized data source in consumer research; yet, the interpretation of such data remains a source of confusion for many researchers. This article aims to address this issue by offering a comprehensive and accessible review of four prominent data collection methods proposed in the marketing literature: 'informal studies,' 'multiple-ad studies without holdout,' 'single-ad studies with holdout,' …
Offline Context Affects Online Reviews
This empirical study investigates whether unpleasant weather—a prominent aspect of a consumer’s offline environment—influences online review provision and content. It uses a unique dataset that combines 12 years of data on hotel bookings and reviews, with weather condition information at a consumer’s home and hotel address. The results show that bad weather increases review provision and reduces rating scores for past consumption experiences. Mor…
Promoting Data Richness in Consumer Research
As stated in the mission of the Journal of Consumer Research (JCR) (2022) and a recent editorial (Schmitt et al. 2022), JCR is a multi-disciplinary journal where consumer research provides insights about consumers and consumption in the marketplace in a way that meaningfully extends the knowledge from one of our core disciplines (e.g., psychology, sociology, economics) about a consumer-oriented construct. Unfortunately, the labels “consumer resea…
Social Media Intelligence
In the world of Facebook, Twitter and Yelp, water-cooler conversations with co-workers and backyard small talk with neighbors have moved from the physical world to the digital arena. In this new landscape, organizations ranging from Fortune 500 companies to government agencies to political campaigns continuously monitor online opinions in an effort to guide their actions. Are consumers satisfied with our product? How are our policies perceived? D…
