    Open Access•Ineta Lipša•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•2023

In the territories of the Russian Empire populated by the Latvians, the years of the First World War (1914–1918) and the ensuing Latvian War of Independence (1918–1920) witnessed a significant transformation in the discourse on family planning and birth control. Because men were mobilized, there was a marked fall in the number of registered marriages, which meant that women had only a slim chance of marrying and planning a family. The nation's id…

    Open Access•Ineta Lipša•ARTICLE•Latvijas Vēstures Institūta Žurnāls•2022

The article focuses on male same-sex subculture in public space in Riga during the Second World War and late Stalinism. It analyses the performance of same-sex desire through which the public space was appropriated for male same-sex purposes. The article argues that during the period under discussion, same-sex loving men, who socialised in Riga, perceived themselves as recognisable and positive agents in urban life, thus creating the vibrant male…

Lietuvietes, (1879–?) stāsti ir pagaidām vienīgie zināmie detalizēti vēstītie sieviešu pieredzes gadījumi. Abu pierakstīšanu veicināja biedrības “Piektais gads” 1926. gada aicinājums aktīvajiem revolūcijas dalībniekiem iesniegt anketas par pieredzēto. 1930.–1931. gadā daži …

    Ineta Lipša•ARTICLE•Cahiers du monde russe•2021•Cited by: 2

Through narrative analysis of the diary of Latvian queer Kaspars Aleksandrs Irbe (1906–1996), written regularly from 1940 to 1996, the paper focuses on the examination of three themes by which Irbe documented his queer self. First, through the use of the unofficial sexual knowledge he had gained since the 1950s by reading works by early twentieth-century sexologists in German published before the Second World War. Second, through self-identificat…

  • Stigmatized cohabitation in the Latvian region of the eastern Baltic littoral: Nineteenth and twentieth centuries

Andrejs Plakans, Ineta Lipša•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The social history of coresidence arrangements in the Latvian region suggests that forms of cohabitation without marriage were present in the Latvian population since the eighteenth century when empirical evidence became available. Before the twentieth century, however, these forms remained marginal and seldom involved choice. The subject of severe criticism until the 1960s–1970s, such forms become more widespread thereafter as the Latvian popula…
