Gendered and classed experiences of work-family conflict among lone mothers in Sweden
Research on the relationship between lone motherhood and social class is indeed limited. Drawing on 39 in-depth interviews, the overall aim of this article is to increase knowledge of the ways that working conditions and access to economic resources impact on Swedish lone mothers’ opportunities to integrate paid work and family. One assumption is that lone mothers are guided by culturally shaped ideas about the proper way to be a mother, and that…
Family practices among Swedish parents: Extracurricular activities and social class
Research suggests that compared with working-class parents, middle-class parents more commonly enrol their children in organised activities with the aim of increasing their prospects of future success in education and working life. Organised activities are seen as an important contribution to the reproduction of social class. Drawing on a Bourdieusian understanding of social class, this study contributes by exploring class-based reasoning about e…
Lone mothers with low income face obstacles to practice their mothering
Sweden stands out as a forerunner in the development of gender equality and family dynamics. To deepen the knowledge on power distribution and gender dynamics of couple relations, we investigate how women and men’s childbearing intentions influence actual childbearing behavior. The Young Adult Panel Study (YAPS) has information on both partners’ childbearing intentions in 2009, which we follow for five years with register data on childbearing. Th…
Children and risk: A qualitative study on Swedish IT specialists’ transition to parenthood
It is a commonly held belief among sociologists that the ‘Western’ world is developing towards increased individualisation. According to this individualisation thesis, processes of individualisation are linked to the development of a risk society and have profound effects on family life. Drawing on 20 in-depth interviews, this article explores the transition to parenthood among couples who are presumably at the front of individualisation processe…
Putting Gender and Ethnic Discrimination on the Political Agenda: The Creation of the Equal Opportunities Ombudsman and the Ombudsman against Ethnic Discrimination in Sweden
During the last few decades, Swedish welfare policy has been increasingly criticized by various social groups who take as their point of departure the limitations of a social policy that predominantly focuses on class equality and paid work. The establishment of special public authorities, commissioned to combat discrimination against particular groups of citizens, may be interpreted as a manifestation of increased state attention to social disad…
Academic discourse, social policy and the construction of new families
Construction(s) of Swedish Family Policy, 1930-2000
Family politics has been important in the development of the Swedish “women-friendly” and weak-breadwinner welfare state. This article analyzes the development of Swedish family politics during the past century by taking as its point of departure the amalgamation of political ambitions, social reforms, and ideas put forward by experts in government commissions. Results suggest that the social sciences played an important role in the making and sh…
Diversity and Divisions in the Swedish Disability Movement: Disability, Gender, and Social Justice
There is lively discussion in the social sciences about minority groups and their claims for social justice. Universalism versus difference and redistribution versus recognition are two important issues of debate. This paper takes a closer look at the social justice claims articulated by the Swedish disability movement. It discusses how questions of representation, collective identity, and needs interpretations are dealt with in a number of disab…
Önska, välja och vilja. Om beslutet att skaffa barn
Wishing, choosing and wanting. On the decision to have a childFalling birth rates within the European Union have given rise to a number of studies trying to analyse and interpret why women (and men) choose not to have (many) children. One attempt in this direction is made by an ongoing EU-project, involving eight countries, including Sweden. Qualitative interviews focusing on couples’ decisions to have - or not have - children have been carried o…

The results show that while the joint pool was similar in both countries in being associated with the most egalitarian patterns of control over and access to money, Swedish couples using other allocativ…
Inte av kärlek allena. Makt i hemarbetets fördelning
Not from love alone. Power and the division of housework.A recent Swedish study by Ahrne & Roman (1997) shows that married and cohabiting women often feel discontent with their male partner's contribution to housework, while married and cohabiting men commonly feel quite satisfied with the gendered division of housework. This indicates that spouses have different interests and preferences when negotiating the division of housework. The study also…
Familjelivets organisering - ekonomiska resurser, kön och manlig dominans
There is now an extensive body o f feminist research on gender inequalities in marriage based on the assumption that power plays an important causal role here.
