Social construction of (post)postsocialist reality
In this paper, I want to discuss the main proposition from Berger and Luckmann’s seminal book, The social construction of reality (or. 1966) - the idea that the everyday is the arena through which the social world comes into being-and to pair it with the understanding of memories and everyday life in postsocialist studies. It seems that various disciplines dealing with postsocialism sometimes treat the memories of socialism as an untheorized back…
Who Should Care about Our Children
This study explores public childcare policies in socialist Yugoslavia and their postsocialist transformation in Serbia. Focusing on gender regimes of the state provided childcare, we examine how they reflect ideology of availability of public childcare facilities—crèches and kindergartens. Basing our work on archival sources, interviews, and ethnographic material, we show that despite the socialist state’s ideology of gender equality, women conti…
Anthropology and folkloristics
This paper investigates the relationship between anthropology and folkloristics. We are interested in theoretical and methodological similarities and differences between these disciplines, rather than in institutional (political) solutions that differenced the two and produced certain forms of knowledge. It seems that the main difference between folkloristics and anthropology lays in anthropological focus on social and cultural context and proces…
Anthropology of the state
Moral (dis)order and social anomie
It is sometimes argued that post-socialist transformation in Europe brought so called “moral disintegration” of local communities. These ideas resonate well with the opinions of many people with whom I worked in Serbia during my fieldwork research in Novi Sad in the mid- 2000s and again in 2013-2014. My informants tend to evoke the Durkheimian idea that society was brought into existence by people’s moral beliefs and sense of obligation towards o…
Studije kulture i antropologija
This paper discusses the relationship between social (or cultural) anthropology and cultural studies. During the crisis of representation in the 1980s, anthropology rediscussed its own theoretical positions becoming aware of its political and epistemological positions which pushed the discipline towards the growing trends in cultural studies. This opened up anthropology to various theoretical paradigms that did not originate in the anthropology i…
Vision and visuality
This paper presents some similarities between epistemological paradigms in anthropological museum exhibitions and ethnographic films. Both the museum and ethnographic films are analysed as the models of representations based on the domination of vision as mode of knowledge through which curators and film makers produce subjects of their representations. Paradigmatic shifts in the 1980s with the critique of 'modern constitution' and domination of…
The State and Modernity as Anthropological Topics
This paper aims to offer a brief introduction to anthropological studies of modernity and the state. I try to introduce some of the most important theoretical works in this field, built up in different ethnographic contexts ranging from Turkey to Latin America. I was trying to show some of the possibilities of the research of modernity and the state in anthropology emphasizing what anthropology can offer to wider debates on these topics. I arg…
Displaying nationality as traditional culture in the Belgrade Ethnographic Museum
This paper is an exploration of the modernist project of museums' construction of "reality" through the processes of the collecting and displaying of objects, as practiced in the Ethnographic Museum Belgrade. Through the analysis of the museum's collecting and exhibiting practices, I will try to argue that in Belgrade ethnographic museum practice the idea of the nation is closely connected with the idea of ethnicity as a bounded whole of the dist…
Identity construction of a football club on the example of FC Obilić
In this paper I show identity construction of FC Obilić, Belgrade. Material for the research is collected in the first half of the 2002 and it is consisted of the monograph published for the club' s 75th" anniversary, club advertisement materials (T-shirts and calendars) and the club's museum. Discourse analyze used in the paper is the combination of the Foucaultian understanding of discourse and more "practical" use of the term used in linguisti…
