  • The impact of prohibited periods on the seasonality of marriage: Denominational differences and cultural continuities among English settlers in nineteenth century Tasmania

    Open Access•Peter A Gunn•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2026

The prohibitions on marriage associated with the liturgical seasons of Advent, Lent, and Rogation have been among the many influences on the timing of marriage in English populations up to the eighteenth century. Open Access•Rebecca Kippen, Peter A Gunn•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•2011

Its subjects are the early English settlers in Van Diemen's Land, who had to come t…

    Open Access•Peter A Gunn•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•1986•References: 8

The division of responsibility for aged people in modern society, between the State and their adult children, has received little systematic attention although the matter remains a perennial item of public debate. This paper reports the Australian experience of debate and legislation in this field. It is argued that the State assumed responsibility for the support of the elderly when, under pressure from prevailing demographic and economic change…
