Integrating gerontological inquiry into undergraduate education
Increasing life expectancies and growing diversity among adults create a need for scholars who understand intersecting identities in aging. NIA-funded Advancing Diversity in Aging Research (ADAR) programs aim to diversify this workforce; however, additional strategies are needed to expand undergraduate engagement in gerontological research. We integrated an ADAR-informed research poster project into a non-ADAR undergraduate course. Students used …
Caring under pressure
Health disparities, the unequal onset, severity, and treatment of chronic health conditions, are differentially experienced by adults living in different geographic locations in the United States. Coupled with an earlier onset and more severe symptomatology among patients, family care partners may also experience increased stress related to other place-based disparities, including limited access to care and increased economic challenges. Using da…
Health Disparities Among Older Adults
The problem of health disparities across the lifespan and in older adulthood has gained recent attention by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and other organizations and researchers. These disparities are of significant interest as they greatly impact health, life span, and quality-of-life for countless individuals and create economic burden on societies. Given the critical nature of this problem, this special issue will focus on health dispa…
Planning for Program Evaluation Improves Implementation and Assessment
This article offers a general approach to plan and implement an educational program by illustrating the evaluation process and data from the AGE-ADAR Scholars Program. A well-designed program evaluation will also include a plan for stakeholder dissemination. We adapted a framework from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which includes hard and soft outcomes. Hard outcomes include improved academic metrics, including test scores and gr…

The DAS-6
Attitudes toward persons with dementia (PWD) are important predictors of emotional and behavioral outcomes for PWD and their caregivers. It is often desirable to have short, psychometrically-sound measures of such attitudes for inclusion in large community-based surveillance surveys and quick training assessments. The Dementia Attitudes Scale (DAS) is a 20-item scale that examines person-centered knowledge and perceptions of comfort working with …
Grandchildren as Caregivers
Although 10% of family caregivers are grandchildren, only a few studies have examined the experience of grandchildren who provide care to grandparents. The current study examined the caregiving processes and outcomes of grandchild caregivers to grandparents. Participants were ( N = 5,778) adults identified as a caregiver, including 311 adult grandchildren. Analyses showed that although caregivers to grandparents did not differ significantly from …
Introduction to the Special Issue on Advancing Diversity in Aging Research
The following papers represent an early contribution of the National Institute on Aging's commitment to support high-quality research and mentor a more diverse workforce in the field of aging. The International Journal of Aging and Human Development has previously issued calls for such scholarship and has provided opportunities to share some of their teaching techniques that foster and support the next generation of gerontologists. In this issue,…
Religious and Spiritual Growth Goals
Religious and spiritual (R/S) growth goals have been forgotten among self-improvement goals. We used social cognitive theory, useful in other domains of self-improvement, to study R/S goals. Data from 350 adults ( M age = 40.5, SD = 14.6) were used to examine the relations among age, gender, social interactions, and commitment to R/S goals and physical activity goals. Results of the path analysis, X 2 (DF = 2, N = 350) = 9.91, p
Interest in Co-located Reproductive and Sexual Health Services Among Women and Men Receiving Medication for Opioid Use Disorder in an Outpatient Treatment Clinic
Both women and men in this sample are interested in co-located RSH services. Current contraceptive use was low among participants. Contraceptive knowledge was lower among men compared to women, and generally low. Providing co-located RSH services may facilitate RSH education, contraceptive method uptake, and promote engagement across various RSH domains
Examining the longitudinal influences of age and sources of religious doubt on wellbeing
Latent growth curve models tested associations among age, four sources of religious doubt and emotional wellbeing. Adults (N = 179, men age = 37.9 yrs) completed three waves of data collection over a two-year period. Older age was associated with lower initial levels of life satisfaction (b = -.103) and lower initial positive affect (b = -.047) and faster decline in positive affect (b = .028). Age was not significantly associated with initial lev…

Predicting child safety
There are over 2.5 million custodial grandparents raising 4.8 million grandchildren in the U.S. These grandparents face many major struggles, including increasing financial costs, physical disabilities, and deteriorating home environments. Our study investigates grandchild well-being, particularly the safety of custodial grandparents’ homes and its relation to injury prevention. This is crucial, as unintentional injury is the leading cause of dea…
Up From the Ashes
Researchers and clinicians are increasingly exploring the predictors and moderators of posttraumatic growth. To date, however, no studies have fully examined the interactive effects of age and gender in grief and post-traumatic growth. To that end, we examined the moderating effects of age and gender on the relations between grief and post-traumatic growth. A total of 414 adults, ages 18 to 66 years, who were bereaved for 2 years or less, complet…
Religious Doubt and Spiritual Growth Among Adults Bereaved of a Grandparent
Religious beliefs and bereavement provide contexts for personal growth (Benore & Park, 2004). The death of a grandparent may be especially well-suited to prompt such growth. Using data from 164 adults, ages 18 to 51 years, bereaved of a grandparent, the authors examined whether religious doubt relates to current grief via perceived spiritual growth. Mediation analyses showed that fewer religious doubts were associated with spiritual growth in ber…
Adults' Future Time Perspective Predicts Engagement in Physical Activity
Results indicate that FTP may play an important role in explaining engagement in health promoting behaviors across the life span. Researchers should consider additional constructs and perhaps adopt socioemotional selectivity theory when explaining adults' engagement in physical activity
Understanding Disordered Eating at Midlife and Late Life
Current knowledge regarding disordered eating beyond the period of emerging adulthood is limited. Guided by a life-span approach, the present study examined a model of disordered eating that used age, gender, body mass index (BMI), eating-related cognitions, and dissatisfaction with appearance as predictors of disordered eating. Participants were 125 adults in 4 age groups who completed measures. With the exception of BMI (i.e., men and middle-ag…

Self‐rated Health Among Vulnerable Older Adults in Rural Appalachia
Context: Self‐rated health (SRH) predicts service use, morbidity, and mortality. Additionally, SRH has been associated with indices of psychological well‐being. Purpose: The main focus of the study was to investigate important differences among the lower spectrum of SRH (ie, fair and poor) on indices of well‐being. Methods: In‐person interviews collected data from 207 (M age = 75.8) older rural adults. Data were used to examine differences betwee…
