  • Assessing the Acceptability and Potential Emotional Well-Being Outcomes of a Digital, Intergenerational Music Program for Older Adults Living with Dementia

Jennie L Dorris, Ketki Raina et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Intergenerational…•2025•References: 30

Cases of Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementia are expected to triple in the next thirty years. Consequences of the disease include a decline in emotional well-being, which was exacerbated by the isolation imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examined the acceptability and potential effects of a digital, intergenerational music intervention delivered by adolescent musicians on the affect and emotions of older adults…

  • A Qualitative Pilot Study of Adolescents’ Characteristics and Experiences Delivering a Digital, Intergenerational Music Program to Older Adults with Alzheimer’s and Dementia

    Jennie L Dorris, Juleen Rodakowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Intergenerational…•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 36

Music interventions show promise to support critical areas of decline for those living with dementia. There is a gap in identifying the skills and experiences necessary to facilitate the music activities in such an intervention. This pilot research creates an understanding of the characteristics and experiences of adolescent musicians who facilitated a digital, intergenerational music intervention. The research team conducted in-depth interviews …

  • The Relationship between Personal and Contextual Factors and Participation Restriction in Mid-Life Caregivers

    Open Access•Tara C Klinedinst, Scott R Beach et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2023•References: 2

Interventions to optimize caregiving routines and improve dyadic relationships could decrease participation restriction in mid-life CGs

  • Project Unmute

    Jennie L Dorris, Kyle Chang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Intergenerational…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Effective intergenerational music programming has the power to positively influence the current lives of the millions of older adults who are experiencing Alzheimer's disease and dementia, as well as to support the confidence of the newest generation of young musicians. To explore this potential, we designed a digital, intergenerational music program delivered by adolescent musicians to older adults with cognitive decline. This program utilized s…

  • Evaluating the Appropriateness and Feasibility of the Care Partner Hospital Assessment Tool (CHAT)

Open Access•Madeline Carbery, Richard Schulz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Hospital practitioners rely on care partners of older adults to provide complex care without identifying and addressing their needs. The Care Partner Hospital Assessment Tool (CHAT) was developed to identify the education skill training needs of care partners of hospitalized older adults. This two-phased mixed-method study evaluated the appropriateness and feasibility of the CHAT. The phase 1 quantitative survey with caregiving experts indicated …

  • Work Performance Among Informal Caregivers

Open Access•Grant R Martsolf, Ryan Kandrack et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2020

Objectives: To examine the association between informal caregiving and caregiver work performance. Method: A systematized review of the literature. Results: We found that caregiving has an adverse impact on work performance: caregivers experience substantial work disruptions and negative work performance outcomes, and these findings were consistent across measures. Our synthesis suggests that caregivers miss a significant amount of work and have …

  • Timing of Daily Activities over a 24-Hour Period and Affective Status among a National Cohort of Older Dementia Caregivers

Open Access•Sarah T Stahl, Juleen Rodakowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2020

Objective: To examine the allocation of daily activities over a 24-hour period in caregivers (CGs) with and without a probable affective disorder. Methods: Participants were 192 older dementia CGs (mean age = 72.9 years, 70% female) who participated in the National Study of Caregiving. Time diary data were used to measure the duration and timing that caregivers were doing hygienic self-care, eating/drinking, household care, physical caregiving, m…

  • Resting-State Function Connectivity Associated With Being a “Morning-Type” Dementia Caregiver and Having Lower Depression Symptom Severity

    Open Access•Stephen F Smagula, Helmet T Karim et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Prior research shows that amygdala-posterior cingulate connectivity increases when allocating attention to peripheral aspects of negative emotional stimuli. As such, difficulty with morning activation may relate to the ongoing direction of focus around distressing content; in contrast, morning activity participation may serve to limit focus on distress. Replication and experimental studies are required to confirm these associations and their modi…

  • Adverse Consequences of Unmet Needs for Care in High-Need/High-Cost Older Adults

Scott R Beach, Richard Schulz et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 1

Adverse consequences of unmet needs for care are prevalent among HNHC older adults, especially those with multiple indicators, despite more disability-related compensatory efforts and larger helper networks. Helping caregivers provide better informal care has potential to contain healthcare costs by reducing hospitalization and unplanned readmissions
