Kinship care and issues in permanency planning
Kinship caregivers are a child-care resource for families experiencing stress or temporary parenting due to illness, incarceration, or death of a parent. This article examines whether and how felt caregiver burden influences the reported propensity of caregivers to want to adopt the children in their care. Kinship caregivers who were enrolled in KinNET completed the survey (N = 102) and the data were entered anonymously into SPSS for analysis. Th…
Prospective Budgeting for Home Care
The author criticizes the well-known Titration Budgeting Model of Weissert, Chernew, and Hirth in terms of its logical and operational problems but then goes on to develop a framework within which the goals of the titration model can be met and home care resources can be more efficiently allocated

Substitution Between Formally and Informally Provided Care for the Impaired Elderly in the Community
This article assesses the extent to which formally provided comprehensive community care tends to substitute for informal care provided by family and friends to impaired elderly persons living in the community. Using simultaneous equations causal modeling techniques to control for selective targeting and other intervening factors, results, indicate a substantial tendency for formally provided care to be substituted for informal care. Other result…
A mixed estimator interpretation of ridge regression
Assessing the Reliability of Linear Composites
The past several years have marked a considerable upsurge of interest in the conceptualization and measurement of in the social sciences, particularly in regard to measures that are formed as linear composites (weighted or unweighted sums) of individual items (Novick and Lewis, 1967; Bohrnstedt, 1969; Werts and Linn, 1970; Heise and Bohrnstedt, 1970; Armor, 1974; Smith, 1974a). One result of this interest has been a proliferation in the literatur…
A Note on Theta Reliability and Metric Invariance
A basic problem in empirical research using internal consistency reliability coefficients such as Cronbach's alpha is that the coefficients are sensitive to scale changes in the data. This leads to problems in cross-study comparison where the same variables are perhaps being measured, but in different units, and in substantive theoretical generalization, which must always be qualified in terms of a specified metric. In this note we show that coef…
