Female soldiers in TV series
Popular television has always been fascinated by military life and the male soldier. However, the image of the female soldier tends to attract less attention, despite her significant role on the battlefield, in military operations, and as part of army life. Hence, the question of the female soldier’s inclusion in military TV series calls for special attention. The cultural militarism prevalent in Israel and Serbia presents a unique opportunity to…
The normalization of fear
Music plays an important socio-cultural role in constructing and/or reflecting geo-cultural and universal emotional states by giving voice to personal emotional sensibilities, such as self-searching, romantic longing, and desire, alongside collective spatial sentiments, patriotism, etc. Moreover, popular song lyrics reveal the socio-cultural values, norms, tastes, and emotional conventions of both their creators and their audience. Thus, this art…
Digital soap opera’ online radio listening patterns and the digital divide
This article examines the gendered digital divide in Israel in the age of the radiophonic cyber-revolution. The research focuses on increased listening patterns to on-demand, radiophonic content via online radio. Recent years have witnessed a shift in the second level of the gendered digital divide. This shift is effectively captured by the notion of ‘can’t’ transforming into a ‘don’t want to be bothered’ mindset. To explore this phenomenon an on…
The enemy within us
Voting behaviour is often constructed by candidates’ ability to manipulate and set in motion voters’ social ‘nervous system’ by means of juxtaposing two social groups – ‘ours’ and ‘theirs’ – against one another. In the Israeli political arena, this means a sociopolitical ‘zero sum’ game between the right wing and the left wing. The present article seeks to decode the characteristics of right-wing vs. left-wing cognitive metaphors activated in the…
The social representation of incapacity
This article deals with the social representation of incapacity in Israeli political culture by applying CDA (critical discourse analysis) to two outstanding cases of incapacity: permanent incapacity in the case of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon as a result of illness and temporary incapacity in the case of President Moshe Katzav, following a police investigation. A social representation of incapacity in leading figures as seen in the headlines of H…
Media Time Squeezing
Lately, the sense of chronic time pressure promotes the need for a reexamination of media temporal configuration. The basic assumption of this article is that the spread of neoliberalist ideas, together with technological innovations (e.g., digital TV, digital remote control, and digital video recorder), has encouraged the privatization of media time, leading to the experience of media time squeezing. To be more concrete, multichannel application…
It's about time
This article evaluates time perception in public policy by developing and characterising the concept of ‘policy time’. Research in time-related public policy literature portrays two main trends: (1) the pragmatic trend – short-term policy based on a pre-determined schedule as opposed to response-oriented policy; and (2) the normative trend – long-term policy inspired by ‘the voice of the future’ and/or by ‘public interest values’ and/or by ‘avoid…
Dissonant political discourse
This study develops and illustrates the notion of dissonant political discourse. The discourse of dissonance is to be found wherever there is public debate on controversial topics or on topics requiring a decision, notably in the political arena. Discourse of this kind is characterized by arguments demonstrating both how hard and how necessary it is to face up to any decision that will put the decision maker in an inconsistent position. Findings …
Temporary versus Permanent
This article juxtaposes `temporary' versus `permanent' based on a study of the Israeli Prime Minister's `permanent incapacity' (the result of illness) and of the President's `temporary incapacity' (the result of a police investigation). Analysis indicates that: a) temporal maps are mainly framed by focusing on `temporary' states; b) the temporal structure of `temporary' is associated simultaneously with a sense of stability and with a search for …
Between national and constitutional patriotism
Research has traditionally tended to associate patriotism with ethnocentrism and nationalism. But the advancing process of globalization led Jurgen Habermas to develop an alternative model--constitutional patriotism. According to this model, citizens should identify themselves with rational, constitutional principles and with a successful democratic political order. This study tests Habermas's concept by examining the only Israeli financial daily…
