  • The (De‐)Europeanization of the Political Class in the European Parliament

Open Access•Jérémy Dodeigne, François Randour et al.•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2025•Cited by: 4•References: 45

This article presents a systematic empirical analysis of the career patterns of all 3634 members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who served in the European Parliament (EP) over the last 40 years (1979–2019). It explains how changes in the EP's structure of opportunities have shaped the development of MEPs' career patterns. First, we show that the development of a European political class is not a recent trend but that this process took place in…

  • Putting the European Parliament's gender exceptionalism to the test

    Open Access•Jérémy Dodeigne, Silvia Erzeel et al.•ARTICLE•European Union Politics•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 63

The European Parliament is often presented as a success story regarding women's representation. Yet, recent studies observe gendered patterns in parliamentary behaviour. This article contributes to this scholarship by studying gender differences in MEPs’ parliamentary behaviour on ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ policy domains. Analysing 136,787 parliamentary questions over 25 years (1994–2019), the study reveals moderate gender differences in MEPs’ b…

  • Slow adapters or active players? Belgian regional parliamentarians and European affairs after Lisbon

François Randour, Peter Bursens et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Legislative Studies•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 36

How do members of regional parliaments engage in EU policymaking? This paper examines how and why members of the Walloon, Flemish and Brussels regional parliaments vary in their EU-contacting activities, by adapting a German survey. Belgium makes a relevant case, as the ‘in foro interno, in foro externo’ principle entitles regions to conduct foreign policy, including EU affairs in those areas they possess internal competency. Our data show that t…

  • Metaphors, political knowledge and the basic income debate in Belgium

Open Access•Audrey Vandeleene, François Randour et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and the Social World•2023

The framing impact of political discourses has long been attested for. Metaphors in particular are known to ease the understanding of complex concepts and processes. Yet, the question remains to what extent metaphors do work the same on different recipients? Based on an experimental design, we test a potentially key moderating variable in the study of political metaphors: political knowledge. Our experiment aims at determining the extent to which…

  • Studying the influence of national parliaments in EU affairs

    Open Access•François Randour•ARTICLE•Political Research Exchange•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 51

The literature on national parliaments and the EU has built up its knowledge on the strength and activities of domestic parliaments in the European Union. While these studies were of outmost importance to understand how and why parliaments and MPs act on EU affairs, we still know little on the influence of domestic parliaments on the EU policy of their executive and on EU policy-making more generally. The article first presents the current gaps i…

  • More or less regional autonomy? A qualitative analysis of citizen arguments towards (de)centralization in Belgium

    Open Access•Min Reuchamps, Hannelise Boerjan et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative European Politics•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 17

  • Twenty years of research on political discourse

    Open Access•François Randour, Julien Perrez et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2020

There is a long tradition of linguistic research on political discourse, but little attention has been paid to what the concept of political discourse itself encompasses. With this in mind, this article aims to understand what types of discourse are categorized as ‘political’ in linguistic research and what their characteristics are (form, type of actors, policy domains, geographical coverage). To this end, we conducted a systematic literature re…

  • Metaphors in political communication

Open Access•Pauline Heyvaert, François Randour et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 24

This article analyses the use of (deliberate) metaphors in political discourse produced by French-speaking Belgian regional parliamentarians during non-institutional political interviews. The article first investigates if the use of deliberate metaphor limits itself to a particular type of political discourse (i.e. public and institutional political discourse) or if metaphor use is also found in other types of settings (i.e. non-institutional pol…

  • Belgian regional parliaments and the European Union

François Randour, Wouter Wolf•ARTICLE•Journal of Legislative Studies•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 20

Drawing on qualitative case studies of two specific European decision-making processes in the agricultural and environmental sectors, this paper discusses how and why Belgian regional parliaments activated (or not) their control mechanisms to scrutinise their respective regional ministers. The findings show that parliamentary scrutiny of the agricultural and environmental policy fields has undergone a process of institutional and behavioural Euro…

  • The Cultivation of Genetically Modified Organisms in the E uropean U nion

Open Access•François Randour, Cédric Janssens et al.•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2014•References: 2

This article analyzes the reasons why in 2010 the E uropean C ommission proposed a legislative framework on genetically modified organisms ( GMOs ) that could give some powers back to the M ember S tates. This legislative proposal is puzzling since it moves the centre of decision‐making regarding the cultivation of GMOs from the EU level back to the domestic level and it also contradicts the generally acknowledged behaviour of the C ommission as …

  • The reform of the Belgian federal administration 10 years on

Open Access•Christian De Visscher, François Randour•ARTICLE•International Review of…•2014

In the wake of the Copernic reform, Belgium’s senior federal civil servants are now appointed for a fixed term and guided on performance via management plans. This article sets out to assess the impact of the introduction of the fixed-term system on the autonomy of senior civil servants with regard to the horizontal departments responsible for the budget, on the one hand, and human resources, on the other hand, within Belgium’s federal administra…
