Discrimination Under Ego Depletion
This study investigates the effect of self-control on discrimination against groups with perceived controllable and uncontrollable stigmas by experimentally manipulating state self-control. Sixty-nine university students in Canada completed either an ego depletion task intended to temporarily reduce their ability to exert self-control (depletion condition) or a similar task that did not affect self-control (control condition), and then filled out…
The Language Fluency Paradox During Cultural Faux Pas
This research examines the paradoxical effects of nonnative speakers’ language fluency on how they are perceived by native speakers, focusing on likability and competence. Although poor fluency has been shown to shield nonnative speakers from negative evaluations of culturally inappropriate behavior, our findings indicate that this effect is confined to likability and does not extend to competence. Specifically, our results show that Russian prof…
Cultural Narratives in Elder Care
Introduction: Nursing home websites are critical resources for older adults and their families in making care decisions. This study examines the content of Canadian and Korean nursing home websites, focusing on how these messages reflect each country’s distinct values. Methodology: A content analysis of 102 Canadian and 102 Korean nursing home websites was conducted, examining message valence, regulatory focus, cultural values, target audience, a…
The Good Life of the Powerful
A common cliché and system-justifying stereotype is that power leads to misery and self-alienation. Drawing on the power and authenticity literatures, however, we predicted the opposite relationship. Because power increases the correspondence between internal states and behavior, we hypothesized that power enhances subjective well-being (SWB) by leading people to feel more authentic. Across four surveys representing markedly different primary soc…
The Within-Person Dynamics of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation, Affective States, and Cultural Identification
This study investigates the link between motivational and affective experiences in the daily life of bicultural individuals. Employing a diary design, the authors examined the role of cultural identification in the dynamic goal–affect association in East-Asian Canadian biculturals. Using multilevel modeling procedures, the authors found that momentary cultural identification systematically moderated the association between extrinsic motivation an…
The future of person–situation integration in the interface between traits and goals
Training Wheels for Cultural Learning
This research examined the effect of language fluency on the evaluation of culturally inappropriate behavior. A series of video vignettes were created in which a nonnative speaker either followed or broke social rules while displaying varying degrees of fluency in English. Results demonstrated a shielding effect of poor language fluency, such that when the nonnative individual acted in a culturally inappropriate manner, poor fluency in English sh…
Contextualized Personality
We describe our ongoing program of research related to the assessment of contextualized personality, focusing on social roles and cultural cues as contextual factors. First, we present our research employing the traditional assessment approach, wherein participants are asked to rate explicitly their personality across several different roles. We argue that this hypothetical approach is potentially susceptible to the influence of stereotypes, soci…
