  • Commodity Frontiers and Global Capitalist Expansion

    Sabrina Joseph•BOOK•Commodity Frontiers and Global…•2019

This interdisciplinary edited collection explores the dynamics of global capitalist expansion through the concept of the 'commodity frontier'. Applying an inductive approach rather than starting at the global level, as most meta-narratives have done, this book sheds light on how local dynamics have shaped the process of capitalist expansion into 'uncommodified' spaces. Contributors demonstrate that ultimately the evolution of frontier zones and t…

  • Farming the desert

Sabrina Joseph•ARTICLE•British Journal of Middle Eastern…•2017•Cited by: 5

This article examines the social and political factors that contributed to the development of agriculture in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from the 1940s onwards, expanding upon Jason Moore’s concept of the ‘commodity frontier’. Beginning in the mid-twentieth century, agricultural production emerged as a ‘secondary commodity frontier’ propelled by the primary commodity in the region—oil. The example of the UAE illustrates how the dynamics inhere…

  • Islamic Law and the Management of Natural Resources in Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Ottoman Syria

    Sabrina Joseph•ARTICLE•Environment and History•2015

Drawing on evidence from seventeenth and eighteenth century Islamic legal sources in Ottoman Syria, the paper examines the laws governing the use and management of natural resources, particularly for agricultural production. Islamic jurists played a key role in mediating the state's relationship with local populations and legitimising local practices and customs that governed land and water use. Often, this translated into laws which prioritised …

  • Waqfin Historical Perspective

    Sabrina Joseph•ARTICLE•Institute of Muslim Minority…•2014•Cited by: 2

Since the beginnings of Islam, awqāf or religious endowments have been the medium through which various public services (i.e. schools, hospitals, and mosques) have been provided to communities. Historically, endowments were both insulated from state authority and an emanation of imperial and/or state power. Modern day Muslim scholars have taken a renewed interest in waqf, particularly as Muslim societies look to revive those indigenous institutio…

  • Communicating Justice

    Sabrina Joseph•ARTICLE•Islam and Christian–Muslim…•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Using Shari‘a court records from Ottoman Salonica and Karaferye, this paper examines the nature of justice as articulated by the state and judges vis à vis Christians. As arbiters of local and state/local relations, the courts were responsible for defining and promoting the state's desire for social harmony, efficiency, and order at the local level while also overseeing the rights and obligations of local populations vis à vis state and local off…

  • The Legal Status of Tenants and Sharecroppers in Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century France and Ottoman Syria

    Open Access•Sabrina Joseph•ARTICLE•Rural History•2007

By the middle of the sixteenth century, the role of the tenant farmer and sharecropper in both Syria and France witnessed important transformations which lent increasing relevance to the social and legal status enjoyed by these cultivators. In various regions of France after the sixteenth century, a rising class of bourgeois landholders increasingly appropriated agricultural lands from both peasant proprietors and nobles, leading to the spread of…
