Creation of Man in Islam and Hinduism
This study examines the similarities and differences in ontological views of the creation process as described in Islam and Hinduism. The Islamic view is based on the Qur’ān and Ḥadīth, expounded in the commentaries and auxiliary works of the Islamic scholars, and the Hindu view is rooted in the oldest Vedic scriptures, particularly the Rig Veda. The Qur’ān reaffirms the Judaic account of the creation of Adam as the primordial human, who was esta…

From Ottoman Outreach to Modern Connections
Southeast Asia was known to the classical Islamic world as a region of trade and burgeoning local Muslim communities from the earliest decades of the Islamic era. By the 16th century direct diplomatic connections were established between the local communities and the Ottoman Caliphate and this significant historical relationship is crucial for understanding the dynamics between the Western and Eastern Islamic worlds. Relations persisted until the…
Norms of Rise and Fall of Civilizations in the Qur’An
This paper deals with some of the norms of the establishment and emergence of civilizations according to the Qur’an and analyses the components of such norms. The Qur’an gives explicit attention to the laws and norms on which human societies and civilizations are based, directly and indirectly, by telling the stories of peoples in past eras. The Qur’an also emphasizes that giving priority to the pursuit of material aspects and elements of societi…
Fostering openness in open science
Transformation of science by embracing the concepts of open science presents a very attractive strategy to enhance the reliability of science. Open science policies embody the concepts of open data and open access that encompass sharing of resources, dissemination of ideas, and synergizing the collaborative forums of research. Despite the opportunities in openness, however, there are grave ethical concerns too, and they present a dual-use dilemma…
The Mongol Invasions of Central Asia
The Mongol invasions of Central Asia were the greatest catastrophe in the history of Islamic civilization, laying waste to the global centre of intellectual achievement during the 11 th to 13 th centuries. The classical Islamic civilization of the dawlatayn (Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties) had continued in one form or another into the early 12 th century, supporting the famous blossoming of culture and science which gave birth to the modern world …
The Backlash in Delhi
History tells us much about how a war was fought and won. However, it does not offer us the complete picture inasmuch as it is largely silent about the loser in a conflict and those sympathetic to the cause. This phenomenon in historiography can be noticed in the events of 1857 in the history of India. It was a war of independence but it was seen by most historians merely as a “Sepoy mutiny”. It was a war fought by the common people, men and wome…
Babri Mosque
Since 1855, the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya has been the source of sporadic clashes between Hindus and Muslims. After a thorough scrutiny of the available historical literature on the Mosque, this article argues that to regard it as the birthplace of the Hindu deity Rama is untenable and the notion was actually put into circulation by British colonial officials to serve British interests in the Indian subcontinent. Successive colonial administrations…
