The Paradox of Asean Centrality
ASEAN, as being on the very core of this matter, deserves close attention through the case of Timor-Leste for understanding international strategic inclusion-exclusion dynamics. The manuscript we provide tackles this case through a small country ‘in-between’ the core global actors of economic and political concern: Timor-Leste as a ground for grasping large-scale complexities in decision-making processes, as much as the micro-understanding and dy…
State transformations through public, multilevel, and territorial governance in European Union
This article discusses “public,” “multi‐level,” and “territorial” governance, highlighting the reformulation of the state based on a double dynamic, vertical and horizontal, of displacement of state power in the European Union. We propose that public governance opened up to the ambivalence between “multi‐level” and “territorial” governance. This ambivalence is evident in the practical challenges within European governance in the making. According…
Towards an Ecumenial or a Catastrophic City A Design, Ecumene and Humanitarian Discussion
This paper is an attempt to explore the interplay of humanity and science to respond to novel globalization processes in the face of the 21st century. The human situation is presented through two schisms: the human-nature and the socio-cultural. Sustainability and ecumene studies are proposed as the new aggregated science fields aiming at solutions for the 21st century. Ecumene studies respond to the need to create a planetary intellectual infras…
Urban Compactivity Models
Urban compactivity models are increasing around the globe, and sustainability has become the new buzzword. In recent decades, the focus of ecological responsibility has been shifted to the world’s cities, as they are the source of excessive consumption, major waste production, social inequalities, and global imbalances of economic wealth. This literature review is a contribution to the exploration of compactivity models that urgently aim at more …

The “Readiness” of Timor-Leste
This article is based on an empirical research with an inductive approach about the admission of Timor-Leste (TL) to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). We examined a corpus of international newspapers ( n = 48) which forms a debate over this case on the Internet. The articles are reproduced in English and are currently the most representative form of debating the membership delay which takes place since 2011. Throughout the observati…
