  • Towards a Theory of Oral Criticism for Early Buddhist Scripture

    Nathan Mcgovern•ARTICLE•Numen•2024•Cited by: 1

Because they were originally composed and passed down in oral form, the early Buddhist texts are not amenable to analysis through the tools of standard textual criticism. Taking Milman Parry’s oral theory as a starting point, this article suggests the possibility of an “oral criticism” that can be used with early Buddhist texts and proposes three basic principles to be used therein: (1) applying source criticism to themes rather than texts, (2) c…

  • De-Centering the Normative in the Introduction to Buddhism Class

    Nathan Mcgovern•ARTICLE•Buddhist Studies Review•2021•References: 4

In this article, I present an alternative method for teaching the Intro to Buddhism class. The standard way of teaching this class allows little room for non-normative aspects of Buddhism such as violence, and insofar as it does, it implicitly frames them as “aberrations” from “real Buddhism.” In my syllabus, I began by having students read The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh, which teaches them about Buddhist doctrine with a se…

  • The Snake and the Mongoose

    Nathan Mcgovern•BOOK•Snake and the Mongoose•2018

This book turns the commonly accepted model of the origins of the early Indian religions on its head. Since the beginning of modern Indology in the 19th century, the relationship between the major early Indian religions of Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism has been based on an assumed dichotomy between two metahistorical identities: “the Brahmans” and the newer “non-Brahmanical” śramaṇa movements. Textbook and scholarly accounts typically purport a…

  • The Brahman as the Head of a Household: The Emergence of Identity in Early Indian Religion

    Nathan Mcgovern•BOOK•Snake and the Mongoose•2018

This chapter, complementing the previous one, examines the articulation of Brahman identity that understood the Brahman to be a non-celibate householder, namely, that found in the Dharma Sūtras. It shows that the Dharma Sūtras were not simply intra-Brahmanical texts, but rather polemical texts articulating a particular, non-celibate vision of Brahmanical identity. They did so first by using for the first time a fully explicit statement of the var…

  • Balancing the foreign and the familiar in the articulation of kingship: The royal court Brahmans of Thailand

    Open Access•Nathan Mcgovern•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Scholars of Southeast Asia have for several decades moved away from theories of ‘Indianisation’, in favour of theories of ‘localisation’. So far, however, there has been little attempt to apply the methodological shift from Indianisation to localisation to an important living relic of the prime agents of older Indianisation theories: the royal court Brahmans of Thailand. In this article, I examine the history of this still-functioning Southeast A…
