Open Access•Javier Gil-Quintana, Alexandra Valencia Peris et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2026

This paper reports on the discrimination faced by transgender adults in Spain during their childhood, specifically in physical education (PE) classes, and compares it with cisgender students. An initial sample of 1,659 Spanish participants aged 18–74 was narrowed to 393, including transgender and cisgender individuals. Data were gathered via a LimeSurvey questionnaire distributed through LGBT Spanish associations and social media. Key variables i…

Open Access•Honor Keane, Sherree D Halliwell et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Educational Research•2026

Current literature highlights the need for educational settings to be safe, inclusive, and affirming learning environments for learners with innate variations of sex characteristics (IVSCs) to ensure optimal educational experiences and outcomes; however, the research metasynthesizing the existing limited research is lacking. This scoping review brings together existing literature and highlights recommended IVSC-inclusive interventions, support me…

Introduction Students with innate variations of sex characteristics (IVSC; also known as intersex variations) encounter significant challenges within health and physical education (HPE) in school settings negatively impacting their educational outcomes. The scarcity of comprehensive synthesis of existing empirical literature underscores the urgent need for focused inquiry to inform IVSC-inclusive HPE education policies, curricula, and practices. …

  • How is intersectionality being represented by Australian sports organisations? A content analysis

Open Access•Karen Lambert, Lisa Young et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 41

In the realm of critical social theory, the application of intersectionality is crucial for addressing social inequalities and advocating for social justice. Our research focuses on the growing integration of intersectionality in Australian sport systems, a development observed in government documents and sports organisations’ operational procedures. Despite this trend, challenges persist in effectively implementing intersectionality due to the c…

  • Intersex awareness and education

Lisahunter, Lisa Hunter Lisahunter et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 4

It is well-documented that schools fail to adequately engage with contemporary content about intersex awareness and education or inclusion of people with intersex variations. Where sexuality and relationships education are the remit of Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum in countries such as Australia, the learning area shows little obligation/response-ability towards the needs of students with intersex variations. It also fails to pay…

  • Are we there yet? (Illusions of) Inclusion in sport for LGBT+ communities in Australia

Open Access•Ryan Storr, Ruth Jeanes et al.•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2022•Cited by: 7•References: 47

This paper reports findings from five recent studies related to gender and sexuality in Australian sport. It offers a challenge to widespread claims that exclusionary practices such as homo/bi/transphobia have been reduced or eliminated within sport settings. We suggest there remains much to be done towards 'inclusion', and that the concept itself is perhaps an illusion. Drawing on 'diversity work' theory we suggest inclusion is yet to be fully r…

  • Towards a whole-school approach for sexuality education in supporting and upholding the rights and health of students with intersex variations

Sherree D Halliwell, Annette Brömdal et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2021

It is well documented that the most effective sexuality education programmes employ a whole-school learning approach. More specifically, when schools and their leaders and teachers embrace such an approach, they view student learning in the context of the whole experience of being at school – from the classroom, to the home and the partnerships schools form with the local community. In parallel to this, people born with intersex variations report…

Bluespace, where water people immerse themselves for thrills, therapy, or thalassography, is constantly fluctuating, influenced by materials, nature, and discourse. Drawing on onto-epistemological aspects of embodied theory-method, we report entangled prototype 'cyborg' in situ strategies (mobile, sensory [auto]ethnography, and self-interview) to notice, record, and ultimately create human-water relations, from the perspective of a surfer. • Schooling and sexualities

Emma Charlton, Lisahunter et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2018

While there have been significant shifts in relation to schooling and sexualities over the last two decades, some conversations are remarkably reminiscent. This special issue of Sex Education aims to capture some of the shifts and gaps emerging in a trio of decennial collaborations\nheld in Australia, known as the Schooling and Sexualities Conferences. In this introduction, we describe the history of the conferences, the papers in this collection…

  • Keeping abreast of gendering practices in health and physical education and physical culture

Lisahunter, Lisa Hunter Lisahunter•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2018•References: 12

At an embodied and personal level this paper plays with what Evans, J., & Davies, B. (2011. New directions, new questions? Social theory, education and embodiment. Sport, Education & Society, 16(3), 263–278) suggests are ‘the complexity and nuances of biology in culture and the influence of body pedagogies in the production of social inequalities and hierarchies.’ (p. 263). Despite extensive attention to gender order, sexualization, sexual subjec…

  • What a queer space is HPE, or is it yet? Queer theory, sexualities and pedagogy

Lisahunter, Lisa Hunter Lisahunter•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2017•Cited by: 11•References: 26

Physical education, or HPE, is arguably a very queer space not only in the daily practices between students and teachers in schools but also in the broader field. This paper explores theoretical interactions with the HPE field in terms of the development and employment of queer theory, and links between associated sexualities and pedagogy research in HPE. I begin by (not) defining queer theory, its emergence and development. In short, I argue tha…

  • Entering the field

Erin Christensen, Tainá Rossi et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2016•References: 16

Little is known about beginning teachers’ political positioning experiences of the staffroom. This paper employs Bourdieu's conceptual tools of field, habitus and capital to explore beginning health and physical education teachers’ positioning experiences and learning in staffrooms, the place in which teachers spend the majority of their non-teaching school time. From an Australian context, we present beginning (or emerging) teachers’ stories fro…

From our storied worlds, narrative research reveals complex embodied and emplaced social phenomena within this field. However, there are still many questions about how we might begin to take more seriously the lived body, the phenomenologic…

Fiona Dowling, Robyne Garrett et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2013•Cited by: 14•References: 29

At a recent international education conference, current life history and narrative research within Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) was criticised for its seeming inability to ‘produce anything new’ and for lacking ‘rigour’. This paper aims to respond to the criticism and to reassert the strengths of narrative inquiry in the current moment.
