  • The Beads of Athribis, Middle Egypt

Patricia Elsner, Marcus Müller•ARTICLE•Beads (Ottawa. Online)/Beads•2025

It was in 2012 that the University of Tübingen started the proper excavation of the temple of King Ptolemy XII at Athribis. This temple was reused for many years during the Late Roman (Coptic) and medieval (Islamic) periods until its destruction between the mid-10th and the mid-11th century. During that time the temple was filled with debris and rubbish, and several rooms were temporarily used as animal pens. Beside a variety of objects such as w…

  • The rise and fall of liberal aspirations in international politics

Open Access•Jens Steffek, Ana Schenk et al.•ARTICLE•International Relations•2025

The concept of aspirational politics has intrigued scholars of international policy fields in which noble goals contrast with poor performance. In this article, we examine two aspects of aspirational politics that have found little attention so far. First, as aspirations are formulated vaguely we need to trace their shifting meaning over time. To shed light on such shifts we analyse the career of ‘good governance’ at the United Nations (UN) betwe…

  • What is German ‘Angst’ (fear/anxiety)? A corpus approach based on frame analysis

Open Access•Ni Yan, Ni Yan Ni Yan et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Cognition•2025•References: 43

The study employs a corpus-based frame analysis, grounded in Barsalou’s frame notion, as a complementary methodological approach to metaphor analysis for studying emotion concepts. We examine the conceptualization of the German ‘Angst’, which is widely recognized as a uniquely German emotion concept, yet it remains insufficiently studied. Through a systematic analysis of linguistic patterns, this study reconstructs the frame structure of ‘Angst’ …

  • Moral und Moralisierung

Maria Becker, Ekkehard Felder et al.•ARTICLE•Deutsche Sprache•2023

  • Category Development at the Interface of Interpretive Pragmalinguistic Annotation and Machine Learning

Open Access•Michael Bender, Maria Becker et al.•ARTICLE•Digital humanities quarterly•2023

In this paper, we present a case study on quality criteria for the robustness of categories in pragmalinguistic tagset development. We model a number of classification tasks for linguistic routines of discourse referencing in the plenary minutes of the German Bundestag. In the process, we focus and reflect on three fundamental quality criteria: 1. segmentation, i.e. size of the annotated segments (e.g. words, phrases or sentences), 2. granularity…

  • Transkriptionspraktiken in der Kunstkommunikation

    Open Access•Marcus Müller•ARTICLE•Linguistik Online•2023

The article explores the expressions and purposes of linguistic transcription methods in the realm of art communication, taking a linguistic approach. Within the discourse surrounding artworks, a crucial linguistic practice is description. Description can be understood as a purposeful process of translation from one form of sign to another, grounded in the semiotic principle of transcriptivity, as proposed by Jäger (2010). Descriptions of art con…

  • The Tug-of-War over Drone Strike Oversight

    Marcus Müller, Florian Böller•ARTICLE•Congress & the Presidency•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 35

Despite the increasing use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in counter-terror operations, executive-legislative relations, intelligence oversight, and war powers regarding drone strikes have received scarce scholarly interest. Our article contributes to filling this gap and focuses on the politics of congressional oversight of drone warfare—in particular those operations conducted by the CIA (Title 50 operations) during the Obama administration…

  • Diskurs korpuspragmatisch

  • Communicating the unknown

Open Access•Marcus Müller, Sabine Bartsch et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This paper presents an annotation approach to examine uncertainty in British and German newspaper articles on the coronavirus pandemic. We develop a tagset in an interdisciplinary team from corpus linguistics and sociology. After working out a gold standard on a pilot corpus, we apply the annotation to the entire corpus drawing on an “annotation-by-query” approach in CQPWeb , based on uncertainty constructions that have been extracted from the go…

  • Risk’ in political discourse. A corpus approach to semantic change in German Bundestag debates

    Marcus Müller, Ruth M Mell•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Our paper presents a diachronic corpus linguistic approach to the conceptualisation and framing of ‘risk’ in German parliamentary discourse. We analyse all occurrences of risk based on the complete collection of plenary protocols of the German Bundestag covering the legislative periods 1–18 (1949–2017). We apply methods used in Digital Discourse Analysis to show how the concept of ‘risk’ changes through time. Therefore, we investigate co-occurren…

  • Understanding discourse and language of risk

Jens Oliver Zinn, Marcus Müller•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Understanding risk communication in the public sphere is important for risk studies since the management of risk not only requires decision makers and experts to communicate risk well but also to understand how risk is debated in the public sphere more broadly. This special issue therefore discusses approaches which examine the linguistic representation of risk in text and how it changes over time. With the increasing body of digitised text avail…

  • Terminological Entrepreneurs and Discursive Shifts in International Relations

    Open Access•Jens Steffek, Marcus Müller et al.•ARTICLE•International Studies Review•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 67

The disciplinary history of international relations (IR) is usually told as a succession of theories or “isms” that are connected to academic schools. Echoing the increasing criticism of this narrative, we present in this article a new perspective on the discipline. We introduce concepts from linguistics and its method of digital discourse analysis (DDA) to explore discursive shifts and terminological entrepreneurship in IR. DDA directs attention…

  • Classifying heuristic textual practices in academic discourse

Open Access•Maria Becker, Michael Bender et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2020•References: 3

In this paper, we investigate how deep learning techniques can be applied to discourse pragmatics. As a testcase we analyse heuristic textual practices, defined as linguistic implementations of decision routines in research processes in academic discourse. We develop a complex annotation scheme of pragmalinguistic categories on different levels of granularity and manually annotate a corpus of texts across various scientific disciplines. This is t…

  • Unleashing the watchdogs

    Open Access•Florian Böller, Marcus Müller•ARTICLE•European Political Science Review•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 47

This article contributes to a burgeoning literature on parliamentary war powers by investigating the case of the US Congress drawing on both International Relations (IR) research and traditional war powers studies. Applying a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis and case study method, we examine the conditions shaping congressional assertiveness. The article shows that the lack of national security interests and divided government are impor…

  • Sprachliches Rollenverhalten

    Marcus Müller•BOOK•Sprachliches Rollenverhalten•2015

This corpus pragmatic study addresses the symptomatic function of lexical and grammatical constructions in relation to the speaker's affiliation with groups that develop discourses through their shared social position. It uses a corpus of spoken and written communications on the bioethics debate to examine qualitative and quantitative correlations between spoken and written verbal patterns and roles, medium and context.
