Teaching Writing
With just the two words of the title “Teaching writing,” we are thrown into ambiguity characteristic of the enterprise the title names. Is that second word a participle, referring to the activity of generating, composing, and revising ideas on paper, or is it a more static gerund noun form—writing as an artifact, as text presented on a page, performing social functions? The position we take with regard to the multiple realities encompassed in thi…

Out of the Woods
Twenty-five years ago, writing instruction was characterized by an approach that focused on linguistic and rhetorical form. Since then, we have gone into the woods in search of new approaches, focusing in turn on the writer and the writer's processes, on academic content, and on the reader's expectations. The Toefl Test of Written English
Owned and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), taken by approximately 600,000 students a year, influences access to or exclusion from colleges and universities in North America. This article provides background information about the TOEFL and ETS; describes the development of ETS tests of composition for native speakers of English and of the most recent addition to the TOEFL tes…

Language Proficiency, Writing Ability, and Composing Strategies
This study was designed to examine ESL student writers at different levels of instruction, to describe their writing strategies as shown in think-aloud protocols, and to compare their composing behaviors with what we know about native speaker student writers. Eight ESL students, four inremedialESL writing courses and four incollege-levelwriting courses, were given two different writing tasks for think-aloud composing. The resulting protocols were…
What Unskilled ESL Students Do as They Write
Research on composing by native speakers of English has shown that the processes used by skilled writers can be described and taught in the classroom. Researchers have also examined the composing behaviors of unskilled writers to determine common features and to make recommendations for classroom teaching. While ESL composition research has pointed out the similarities between the processes of experienced L1 and L2 writers, less attention has bee…
Tradition and Revolution in ESL Teaching
Revolutions in science, Thomas Kuhn argues, occur when the shared set of intellectual assumptions that form the tradition of a discipline (a paradigm) breaks down and gives way to another, causing controversy and insecurity in the process. This article begins by exploring the development of language teaching in the light of Kuhn's theory. It summarizes the theory, points to analogies in the field of the teaching of writing, briefly defines our po…
