Duelling Languages
Myers-Scotton’s Direlliiig Laizgirqys is a book which deals with codeswitching (CS) from a sociolinguistic, but also, and predominantly, from a linguistic and a psycholinguistic point ofviewv. The book first came out in 1993, in hardback only, but has apparently been received so well that Oxford University Press decided to bring out a new paperback edition in 1997. Self-Repair in L1 and L2 Production
In this article we will give an overview of the findings of L1 and L2 self-repair studies to date. A comparison between L1 and L2 self-repair research shows that, while L1 studies are firmly based in theory, most L2 studies are not. In order to contribute to theories and models of L2 production and acquisition, L2 self-repair studies will have to be more theory-driven than has been the case so far. The data which we used for this purpose are 771 unintentional language switches which occurred in a 35-hour corpus of L2 learner English collected from 45 Dutch learners at 3 different proficiency levels. The occurrence of the language switches turned out to be related to the learners' proficiency in Englis…
Communication Strategies in L1 and L2
This paper sets out to explore similarities and differences in L1 and L2 referential communication. Some inadequacies in existing taxonomies of L2 communication strategies are pointed out and an alternative taxonomy is presented in which similar distinctions are proposed to the ones made in studies of L1 referential communication. An account of an experiment is given in which native speakers of Dutch had to describe, first in Dutch and then in En…
The Influence of Task- and Proficiency-Related Factors on the Use of Compensatory Strategies
The study described in this paper was set up to investigate the effect of foreign language learners' proficiency level on compensatory strategies used by these learners to solve lexical problems. At the same time, the effect of task-related factors on compensatory strategies was examined. The study involved three groups of Dutch learners of English at three different proficiency levels. The subjects were tested on three different tasks: a picture…
