When Self‐Reference Diminishes in Competition
Prior research has established that individuals tend to preferentially remember self‐relevant information—a phenomenon known as the self‐reference effect. This effect is often modulated by the emotional valence of stimuli, typically manifesting as a self‐positivity bias. Despite the focus on collaboration, competitive contexts remain a critical yet overlooked avenue for investigation. This study examined how self‐referential memory processes oper…
How procurement choices impact local governments’ budgeting capability
Local governments in many countries are navigating a turbulent financial environment, challenging their ability to maintain budgetary control. A key indication of this declining control is the occurrence of budget deviations, defined as over- or underspending relative to the original budget. While budget deviations can have significant negative societal consequences, there is limited understanding of what drives deviations. In this paper, we exam…
The balance and potometric sap flow calibration approaches that rely on transpirational pull yield inconsistent estimates of transpiration
Calibrating sap flow sensors enhances the accurate estimation of whole-tree transpiration is crucial for understanding forest water use and managing water resources, however calibration approaches that rely on different directional forces to move water through tree stems (push force vs transpirational pull) can result in different calibration coefficients. It remains unclear whether coefficients differ between approaches that use the same directi…
Mind the gap! addressing gender inequality in physical activities among older adults in China and India
The study highlights the need for targeted, gender-sensitive interventions, including community-based programs and public health campaigns, to promote physical activity among older women. By addressing these disparities, China and India can improve the health outcomes of their aging populations and contribute to more equitable public health strategies. The research underscores the importance of a collaborative approach involving governments, heal…
Global landscape of mortality and risk factors for aortic aneurysm in adults aged 55 years and older
The incidence and mortality rates of aortic aneurysm have been rising globally, particularly among the elderly. The aim of this study is to investigate the global patterns, temporal trends, risk factors, and future burden of aortic aneurysm in the elderly. This study analyzed trends in the burden of aortic aneurysm on the elderly using the 2021 Global Burden of Disease data. Key metrics include age-standardized death rate (ASDR), age-standardized…
Causal relationship of genetically predicted particulate matter 2.5 level with Alzheimer’s disease and the mediating effect of dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate
Our findings affirm a significant causal association between PM2.5 exposure and AD, with DHEAS playing a mediating role in this relationship
Exploring the multitemporal surface urban heat island effect and its driving relation in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration
Examining the Potential Scaling Law in Urban PM2.5 Pollution Risks along with the Nationwide Air Environmental Effort in China
Urban scaling law provides a quantitative understanding of the fundamental nonlinear properties of how cities work. Addressing this, this study intended to examine the potential scaling law that may lie in urban air pollution. With ground-monitored PM2.5 data and statistical socioeconomic factors in 265 Chinese cities (2015-2019), a targeted analysis, based on the scaling power-law model and scale-adjusted metropolitan indicator (SAMI) was conduc…
An integrated approach for investigating pharmacodynamic material basis of Lingguizhugan Decoction in the treatment of heart failure
Intra‐provincial fiscal decentralization, relative wealth, and healthcare efficiency
Decentralizing fiscal power to locally elected governments is often regarded as beneficial for public service efficiency. However, questions remain about whether decentralizing fiscal responsibilities work well in countries lacking political decentralization. In China, fiscal decentralization has significantly strengthened the role of local governments in the provision of healthcare services, but evidence of its efficiency effects is scarce. To c…
The epidemiological impact of the Canadian Covid Alert app
While the nationwide rates are low, provinces with widespread adoption of the app showed high ratios of averted cases and deaths (upper bound was greater than 60% of averted cases). This finding suggests that the COVID Alert app, when adopted at sufficient levels, can be an effective public health tool for combatting a pandemic such as COVID-19
Understanding the spatiotemporal pattern of the urban heat island footprint in the context of urbanization, a case study in Beijing, China
Cross-Cultural Encounters
This article examines the changing nature of Austen's reception in China since the 1950s, in particular the growth of feminist critical approaches to her work among contemporary Chinese scholars. Among Austen's works, Pride and Prejudice has remained at the centre of scholarly and popular attention and has had a major impact on Chinese readers’ view of Austen as a feminist writer. Anglo-American scholarship commonly considers Austen's feminism in…
The determinants of fiscal transparency in Chinese city-level governments
The transparency of the fiscal performance of governments has attracted attention from researchers, policy-makers and practitioners around the world. This study examines the determinants of fiscal transparency in the city-level governments of China, which has become a key issue in the drive to modernise the Chinese state. Employing cross-sectional data from the 2017 Statistical Yearbooks published by the official statistical institutions and the …
In Vitro and In Vivo Testing to Determine Cd Bioaccessibility and Bioavailability in Contaminated Rice in Relation to Mouse Chow
A combination of an in vitro physiologically based extraction test (PBET) and an in vivo mouse model was used to determine Cd oral bioaccessibility and estimate bioavailability in Cd-contaminated rice. The PBET found lower Cd bioaccessibility in the intestinal stage (40−50%) than in the gastric stage (93−98%) for both rice and mouse chow. No significant difference was found in Cd bioaccessibility between contaminated rice and Cd-amended mouse cho…
A Cross-cultural Perspective on the Early Reception of Jane Austen in China
In China, Jane Austen has enjoyed a marked increase in popularity over the last few decades. However, her reception has greatly altered since her works were first introduced to Chinese readers in the early 20th century. This article examines the early Chinese reception of Austen, whose fiction was largely disapproved of by early Chinese translators and scholars for not engaging with the major political and social events of her time. The first hal…
Oral Bioaccessibility and Exposure Risk of Metal(loid)s in Local Residents Near a Mining-Impacted Area, Hunan, China
Metal(loid) contamination of food crops and soils resulting from mining activities has been a major concern due to the potential risk to humans. In this study, a total of 36 rice (home-grown and market rice), 38 vegetable, 10 drinking water, 4 river water, 18 soils and 30 urine samples were collected from an abandoned mining area or the local residents in China. Results showed that metal(loid) levels in some of the soil and drinking water samples…
