A meta-analysis of the reliability of second language reading comprehension assessment tools
The present study aims to meta-analyze the reliability of second language (L2) reading assessments and identify the potential moderators of reliability in L2 reading comprehension tests. We examined 3,247 individual studies for possible inclusion and assessed 353 studies as eligible for the inclusion criteria. Of these, we extracted 150 Cronbach’s alpha estimates from 113 eligible studies (years 1998–2024) that reported Cronbach’s alpha coefficie…
Foreign Trade in the Modern Egg Industry and the Rural Economy
In the first half of the 20th century, the global egg market expanded continuously, gradually making eggs an important commodity in China’s modern foreign trade. Between 1912 and 1937, egg production in China’s major egg trade regions increased moderately in line with the growth of the number of chickens, but there was no significant improvement in the egg output per chicken. The expansion of the egg market did not lead to the emergence of specia…
Effective bilingual education in Francophone West Africa
Bilingual education that incorporates a local language alongside the official language has become an increasingly common approach in sub-Saharan Africa for improving literacy rates and learning outcomes. Evidence suggests that bilingual instruction is largely associated with positive learning and literacy outcomes globally. However, the adoption of bilingual education does not guarantee positive learning outcomes. This paper reviews bilingual pro…

The methodology of the research on language aptitude
This article provides a comprehensive and critical synthesis of the methods utilized in studies investigating the role of language aptitude in second language acquisition (SLA). The synthesis is informed by sixty-five studies generated by a thorough search of the literature, three meta-analyses (Li, 2015, 2016, 2017), and a thematic issue of Studies in Second Language Acquisition (Li & DeKeyser, in press). The synthesis starts by identifying thre…
Depicting the composition of gut microbiota in children with tic disorders
BACKGROUND: Symptom improvement in children with tic disorder (TD) following fecal microbiota transplantation led us to investigate the gut microbiota in TD. This exploratory study aims to depict the gut microbial profile in patients with TD and explore the impact of dopamine receptor antagonist (DRA) drugs on the composition and metabolic function of the gut microbiota. METHODS: The gut microbiota were profiled in fecal samples of 49 children wi…
A New Green Model for the Bioremediation and Resource Utilization of Livestock Wastewater
The rapid growth of the livestock and poultry industries has resulted in the production of a large amount of wastewater, and the treatment of this wastewater requires sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches such as phytoremediation. A substrate-free floating wetland planted with water dropwort ( Oenanthe javanica ), a common vegetable in Southeast China, was constructed to purify a lagoon with anaerobically and aerobically treated swi…
The Efficacy of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation for Children With Tourette Syndrome
Therapies for Tourette syndrome (TS) are insufficient, and novel therapies are needed. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been a potential therapy for several neurological diseases. Here, we report a preliminary study to investigate the effects of FMT on patients with TS. Five patients with TS received a single administration of FMT via endoscopy. Tic symptoms were assessed by Yale Global Tic Severity Scale-Total Tic Score (YGTSS-TTS) and…
Could arid and semi-arid abandoned lands prove ecologically or economically valuable if they afford greater soil organic carbon storage than afforested lands in China’s Loess Plateau
The Past Lives of Su Shi
The Chan monk Huihong 惠洪 (1071–1128) constructed stories of Su Shi's 蘇軾 (1037–1101) past life as Wuzu Shijie 五祖師戒, a Chan monk in the Yunmen 雲門 lineage. In this article, we will show that Huihong not only constructed the storyline but also recorded in his Buddhist collections all the elements that would shape Wuzu Shijie's image. This article argues that Huihong's accounts should be viewed in the context of a shift of lineage affiliation that occ…
