  • Indigenous language technology in the age of machine learning

Open Access•Sjur Moshagen, Lene Antonsen et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Borealia•2024

Most modern language technology for proofing tools, machine translation and other\napplications is based on machine learning. However, very few Indigenous languages\nhave the necessary amount of texts for making tools based on this technology. When\nmost language technology is based on large language models (LLMs), it bears the risk\nof most of Indigenous language online text being produced by neural text\ngeneration. • Strengthening the Literacy of an Indigenous Language Community: Methodological Implications of the Project Čyeti čälled anarâškielân, ‘One Hundred Writers for Aanaar Saami’

Open Access•Marja-Liisa Olthuis, Trond Trosterud et al.•CHAPTER•Indigenous Research Methodologies…•2021

Aanaar Saami (Inari Sámi) literacy is weaker than that of majority languages in the sense that reading and writing Aanaar Saami is less common. We also discuss the implications this has for Indigenous research. The chapter presents a strategy for producing new readers and writers, both na…

  • Hva er viktig for forståelse? Om maskinoversetting fra nordsamisk

Open Access•Trond Trosterud, Lene Antonsen•ARTICLE•Oslo Studies in Language•2021

The article presents a rule-based machine translation system from Northern Sami to Norwegian. The grammatical analysis is done with Giellatekno and Divvun's North Sami program for analysis and translation. We have written the transfer component (transfer lexicon and grammatical rules) within the framework of the open machine translation system Apertium. The article contains an evaluation of translated text for two different domains. The translate…

  • Language Assimilation During the Modernisation Process: Experiences from Norway and North-West Russia

    Trond Trosterud•ARTICLE•Acta Borealia•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The article gives an analysis of the demographic material for North Sámi in Norway during the last 150 years, and compares it to key tendencies in some of the Uralic languages of the Soviet Union. The present linguistic landscape can be predicted with great accuracy from Friis’ survey of 1860. At that time, bilingualism among the Norwegians was widespread in parishes with predominantly Sámi or Finnish (Kven) population. During the assimilation pr…
