‘This shit is political; shit is real.’ The politics of sanitation, protest, and the neoliberal, post-apartheid city
In this article, the authors discuss the use of shit in a series of protests between 2011 and 2017 in the City of Cape Town, South Africa. They specifically interrogate with how these protests mobilised the abject body as a tactical site of political performance, and employ performance as an organising metaphor and conceptual language for interrogating the politics and implications of the act of throwing shit as a tool of protest. Postcards on the Aesthetic of Hope in Applied Theatre
Embodying ‘lightness’ in the New South Africa—the theatre of Ellis Pearson and Bheki Mkhwane 1993–2008
At the same time as democratic changes in South Africa were heralded as a transformation of the 'rainbow nation', a theatre duo was formed that would endure from 1993 through to 2008. Bheki Mkhwane and Ellis Pearson created a style of physical theatre that was unique, drawing from their respective training and experiences. Mkhwane brought the perspective of township theatre and Zulu traditional storytelling and performance forms, while Pearson co…
The playful theatre of Nicholas Ellenbogen. 1985–1990
This paper seeks to examine three theatre performances directed by Nicholas Ellenbogen in the mid- to late 1980s in the region of KwaZulu-Natal. Ellenbogen is credited with direction for all three productions, Kwamanzi, Horn of Sorrow and Raiders of the Lost Aardvark, and the subsequent scripting of Horn of Sorrow (Graver; 1999). An interview with Rolf Solberg (2003:95) reveals, however, that Ellenbogen sees his play making processes as collectiv…

The Effectiveness of the Vignette Methodology
Most research addressing issues of victimization, such as date rape, has made use of written vignettes. In this study we investigated whether the same patterns of blame attribution are given for written and video vignettes. Three videos depicting hypothetical heterosexual date rape incidents were made. Each one was based on one of three variables that have been shown to have relevance to evaluations of date rape: “owing”, “leading on” and “alcoho…
