Sports events in a transmedia landscape
My sense of nationality goes totally berserk
When Denmark hosted the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in 2022, the riders were met by huge crowds and a jubilant atmosphere. On Twitter, Danish and international audiences extended this behavior as co-producers of a transmedia sports event of global reach. Using the theoretical framework of a typology depicting four general discursive tweet modes, this study examines the communicative patterns involved as Danish residents shared their experi…
Cooperative Collaboration in the Hybrid Space of Google Docs Based Group Work
This study investigates how Google Docs is used and affects group work in classrooms. Inspired by networked learning theory and the concept of learning spaces in education theory, Google Docs group work is conceptualized as a hybrid learning space. Based on close video ethnographic examinations of group work sessions, the analysis focuses upon what the pupils actually do when combining oral and written communication, how the hybrid Google Docs sp…
Balancing media environments
Based on a case study on pupils at a Danish upper secondary school this paper reveals that the pupils’ media experiences in school are dominated by frustrations and feelings of ambiguity. This article provides an analysis and a discussion of a protest over ticket prices among fans of the English football club, Liverpool FC. The protest was organized with the hashtag #walkouton77 and combined social media activity with a massive walkout during a globally televised football match. I explore the #walkouton77 protest from two perspectives: Firstly, how fan-activity transformed a franchised TV football match into a transmedia event. Se…

This entry presents the concept of affordances as part of an ecological approach to understanding how agents interact with objects in their environment. It examines some of the central developments of the concept, from J. J. Gibson's original definition within psychology and Donald Norman's design‐oriented elaborations to newer applications in other fields like communications and media research and education. Key concepts and main topics of debat…
Meme
“Meme” is a term that defines a cultural counterpart to the biological gene. Memetics is a study field that understands culture as an evolution in homology similar to biological evolution. Accordingly, memes are seen as units of cultural information that partake in a selection battle to be spread among the minds of human beings. Although the scientific value of the meme concept has been widely questioned in academic contexts, the meme has proven …
Media evolution and ‘epi-technic’ digital media
The explosive development of new digital media technologies is often described as a media evolution but hardly ever is the concept of ‘media evolution’ taken at face value. This article takes up that challenge by combining cultural evolution theories with medium theory. The article argues that biological selection mechanisms can provide an inroad into a new kind of historical and structural understanding of the relation between human culture and …
