Inclusion and exclusion during Covid-19 school closures
In spring 2020, schools across the world closed down for students and teachers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, there have been numerous inquiries into how the school closures affected students. However, most of these inquiries apply a simple causal perspective according to which school closures are described as cause, and poor wellbeing, learning loss, etc. as effects. The aim of this article is to identify the complex social mechanisms…
The Impossibility and Necessity of Causality in Niklas Luhmann's Theory of Education
According to Niklas Luhmann, causality is both an impossibility and a necessity in education. On the one hand, the task of the teacher is an impossible one, because teaching as communication is a closed system that cannot determine the learning of pupils' psychical system in any causal sense. On the other hand, one cannot practice as a teacher without a belief in causality, i.e., in a causal connection between teaching and learning. In his articl…
Knowledge or competencies? A controversial question in contemporary curriculum debates
The question of knowledge versus competency in contemporary curricula is controversial. In this article we endeavour to show that the controversy has much to do with the way society is conceptualized as either a class differentiated or a function differentiated society. We examine Michael Young’s input to the curriculum debate concerning the question of knowledge with the aim of showing that his knowledge-centred approach, which considers class a…
A window of change
COVID-19 disrupted almost all pedagogical activities in Danish kindergartens. Basic principles were challenged because of new demands for hygiene and social and physical distance. More activities were moved outdoors, group sizes were minimized, parents had to stay outside the grounds and kindergarten teachers had to deal with a lot of insecurity. However, after a challenging period, new potentials emerged, and new, promising pedagogical principle…
Inclusion
The understanding of inclusion in education has transcended the assumption that inclusion is about students with special needs. It concerns the inclusion of all children. With systems theory as a framework, the article argues that in order to handle inclusion as a phenomenon that concerns all children, we need an operational definition of inclusion differentiated according to three dimensions. The first dimension covers different levels of inclus…

Religionens genkomst. Niklas Luhmanns religionsteori
Understanding New Digital Media
How should we understand the new digital media and the effect of digital networks on global communication? Medium theory would be an obvious candidate, suggesting that we are in the middle of a transition from a society based on analogue media (print and electronic) to a society based on digital media. However, the present article suggests we examine another candidate: complexity theory. According to writers such as John Urry, we are in the middl…
Virtual Space
Containing the edited research papers resulting from an ambitious, cross-disciplinary research project, this volume examines the spatiality of virtual inhabited 3D worlds - virtual reality and cyberspace. (Three other volumes look at Interaction, Staging and Methodology.) It is about the communication spaces emerging at the Internet and supported by special 3D interfaces. It is also about the virtual spaces created by virtual reality hardware (CA…
Computeren som medie. Humanioras indtog i computerforskningen

The Computer as Medium
Computers are developing into a powerful medium integrating film, pictures, text and sound, and the use of computers for communication and information is rapidly expanding. The Computer as Medium brings insights from art, literature and theatre to bear on computers and discusses the communicative and organizational nature of computer networks within a historical perspective. The book consists of three parts. The first part characterizes the semio…
Telematics and Regional Development
This research literature review reflects the historical development of research in telematics and regional development, focusing particularly on the inherent research paradigms. In an early phase (the 1960s and 1970s), research was dominated by correlation analyses based on a communication model paradigm with communication as a cause-and-effect process. However, during the 1980s a large number of micro causational analyses were performed. This th…

Sport i TV
Computers in Human Services
Arriving at England in 1830 and being confronted with the newest technology of early industrialism, the Danish philosopher and historian, Bishop N.F.S. Grundtvig, realised at once that technology is something more than “speechless nature”. Technology is also the incarnation of human and social nature, which you don't need to be a technician to be able to appreciate. Actually it is tempting to say that almost the reverse is true — the more you let…
Information Services for Rural Communities
The establishment of a network of ‘telecottages’ or community teleservice centres in Scandinavia commenced in 1985. These centres provide public access to computers and a broad range of software, databases, communications, distance education and other services, and are now making an important contribution to economic, social and cultural development, particularly in more isolated rural communities. Similar installations are being planned or conte…

Qvortrup er gået ind i dette felt bl.a. for at undersøge informarions- teknologiens sociale muligheder. The Social Significance of Telematics
The assumption underlying this book is that we are facing a societal transformation, a “silent revolution” in fact, with consequences at least as far reaching as those of the Industrial Revolution. The author of this book wants to intervene in the current discussion about this revolution, a discussion which is normally colored by a resigned determinism maintaining that the transformation will come about all by itself as an automatic consequence o…
