Hacking feminist futures: Collective memories of polyphonic organizing
Many feminist organization and management scholars align with feminist activists, offering their research as a form of intervention. Thus, research engagement with/as organizational practice may be influenced by feminist epistemologies that emphasize situated and embodied becoming. Assuming that knowledge cannot exist independently of action, the present study explores the potentials of polyphonic feminist organizing as a mode of “knowing-as-acti…
A safe space in a strange place: A case study of the safety mechanisms of CrossFit culture
Based on a 1‐year ethnographic case study of a Copenhagen‐based CrossFit gym we demonstrate how an organized training place is made physically, psychologically, and socially safe. This we show empirically by analyzing how the local multi‐sited CrossFit gym ‘CHALK’ maintains its safe space through three organizing mechanisms: (1) coach‐led learning progression and practice of the physical craft of CrossFit exercise, intended to prevent injury; (2)…
Datafied female health: Sociotechnical imaginaries of femtech in Danish public discourse
The digitalization of health promises individual empowerment while raising the threat of collective surveillance. Conceptualizing these threats and promises as sociotechnical imaginaries, we explore how issues of datafied female health are articulated in Danish public discourse. Empirically, we work with a large data set of Danish news media coverage of algorithmic technologies in the past 10 years (2011-2021). We locate coverage of female-orient…
Yolo Publics: The Potential for Creative Subversion of an Online Trading Community
Digitally mediated publics are often discussed in terms of extremism and radicalization, but it remains possible that digital communication technologies can engender new connections and conversations through 'creative subversion.' This article explores the potentials of one specific instance of such creative subversion: the 'GameStop rescue' as let by members of the subreddit forum 'WallStreetBets' (WSB) in the early months of 2021. From a commun…
Redistributive Solidarity? Exploring the Utopian Potential of Unconditional Basic Income
Using unconditional basic income (UBI) as its empirical prism, this article offers new impetus to the foundational debate within critical theory as to whether and how redistribution and recognition can relate productively to each other. We explore the possibility of redistributive solidarity, arguing that unconditional and universal redistribution may be a means of furthering the recognition of different subjectivities that are not solely defined…
