Health and lifestyle behaviors in colorectal cancer survivors with and without Lynch syndrome
Where Is the Pill for the 'Reproductive Man
We used content analysis methodology to examine the reasons newspaper articles ( n = 121) provide for why we do not have new male contraceptives (NMCs). Articles were six times more likely to state that developing NMCs is good than bad. Yet half of all articles noted the safety or side effects of NMCs, which could leave the public with a sense of confusion or hesitation around the science and interest in NMCs. Our results indicate that while arti…
Assessment of Macro-Level Socioeconomic Factors That Impact Waterborne Diseases
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is an example of a country that suffers from high water scarcity. Additionally, due to the economic drivers in the country, such as phosphate and potash extraction and pharmaceutical production, the little fresh water that remains is generally polluted. The infrastructure, often antiquated in urban areas and non-existent in rural areas, also contributes to poor water conditions and to the spread of waterborne disea…
Acculturation of Chilean Miners in the Sierra Nevada, Alta California
Chilean miners were among the first foreigners to arrive in California during the Gold Rush of the mid-1800s. They were quickly subjected to violent ethnic conflicts with Euroamerican miners that forced many to withdraw from California. Those who chose to stay made adjustments to their material culture and cultural practices in order to ease tensions and gain acceptance into Euroamerican society. This article presents a three-stage acculturation …
Sex Differences in the Relationship between Military Service Status and Functional Limitations and Disabilities
How Money Matters
Using new data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS), the authors consider how educational and parental status influence the relationship between wives' relative earnings and the time they devote to housework in a climate of heightened gender egalitarianism and growing similarity between women's and men's time use. The authors capitalize on the large samples in the American Time Use Survey to study four groups of wives whose varying educationa…
Military Service and Men's Health Trajectories in Later Life
Although veterans experience better health relative to nonveterans around retirement age, they have poorer health than nonveterans among the oldest old. These findings inform our understanding of the veteran-nonveteran health-mortality paradox found in previous research and suggest a health crossover among veterans and nonveterans in later life
Incarceration and Living Arrangements
The authors use data from the 1992 National Health and Social Life Survey to examine the association between incarceration and living arrangements, net of a range of sociodemographic and early life characteristics. Relative to living with a spouse and child(ren), there is evidence that a history of incarceration is strongly associated with several nonnuclear living arrangements, including living alone, as a sole adult with child(ren), with a part…
