  • ‘I don’t mind watching him cum’: Heterosexual men, threesomes, and the erosion of the one-time rule of homosexuality

Open Access•R Scoats, Lauren J Joseph et al.•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2018

In this qualitative research, conducted on 30 gay-friendly, heterosexual, undergraduate men, we examine actual and hypothetical experiences of sexual threesomes, both with two women and one man (FFM), and two men and one woman (MMF). We show a cultural willingness for heterosexual men to engage in not only FFM threesomes, but also MMF threesomes. A year and a half into their university experience, seven of our participants had had at least one FF…

  • Self-esteem among lesbian, gay, bisexual and same-sex-attracted Mormons and ex-Mormons

Lauren J Joseph, Lauren Joseph et al.•ARTICLE•Mental Health Religion & Culture•2017

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and same-sex-attracted (LGB/SSA) individuals in conservative religions often experience stigma, shame, and psychological distress in reconciling their religious and sexual identities, yet religion can also provide existential comfort and social support. We investigated relationships among self-esteem, participation in the Mormon Church, and sexual identity acceptance among 348 LGB/SSA Mormons and ex-Mormons in 2013–2014 and…

  • Repressed anger mediates associations between sexual minority stressors and negative psychological outcomes in gay men and lesbian women

Helen M Hendy, Lauren Joseph et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental…•2016

Sexual minority individuals may be exposed to unique social stressors that include anticipation of harassment and concealment of their sexual identity, with increased risk for psychological problems as a result of such stressors. The present study identified coping behaviors of gay men and lesbian women that mediate these associations between sexual minority stressors and negative psychological outcomes. Participants included 128 gay men and 123 …

  • The influence of gender segregation and teamsport experience on occupational discrimination in sport-based employment

Lauren J Joseph, Lauren Joseph et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 25

This research uses 30 interviews with sport-based employers in the United Kingdom to examine how men’s teamsport participation reproduces men’s advantage in sport-related occupations during hiring for sport employment positions. Not only does formalized gender segregation in sport provide men with vital social networks less attainable to women, but teamsport competition experience, through gendered notions of what counts as ‘teamwork’, being a ‘t…

  • Still Dazed and Confused: Midlife Marijuana Use by the Baby Boom Generation

    Pamela Black, Lauren J Joseph et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 47

National drug use surveys show the baby boom generation using marijuana in record numbers. We test hypotheses based on social learning, rational choice, and strain theories to explain marijuana use among adults aged 50–64 with an intersectional lens to consider racial and gender group differences. Social learning perspectives, pointing to pro-marijuana attitudes and norms acquired through culture, and rational choice approaches, in which marijuan…

  • University Students Leaving Relationships (USLR): Scale Development and Gender Differences in Decisions to Leave Romantic Relationships

  • Who's the Man? Fragile Masculinities, Consumer Masculinities, and the Profiles of Sex Work Clients

    Open Access•Lauren J Joseph, Lauren Joseph et al.•ARTICLE•Men and Masculinities•2012•Cited by: 17•References: 28

Some research on male clients of female prostitutes argues that clients are simply seeking unemotional sexual release or looking for wild and varied sexual experiences. Yet other sex workers portray clients as lonely, vulnerable, and desiring of emotional connection with women. Rather than view this as an 'either-or' scenario-in which all clients fit one profile-we construct two dichotomous models of masculinity for clients and explore their atti…

  • Sexy Ladies Sexing Ladies: Women as Consumers in Strip Clubs

    Kassia R Wosick-Correa, Lauren J Joseph et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2008•Cited by: 10•References: 20

Recent shifts in the consumer base of the sex industry have involved greater female attendance in strip clubs. This article examines how strip clubs and dancers incorporate female patrons into a sexualized space traditionally designed for men by identifying three interactional processes: passing over, sidestaging, and tailoring. We suggest dancers pass over women because they perceive female patron behavior to include resistance to "buying the ga…
