Sīra and Exegesis, Qur’ān 30
Drawing upon the methodology sanad-cum-matn analyses of early source criticism, this study explores and traces the history of the first five āyas of Sūrat al-Rūm ( Q 30:1–5) aiming to recover the historicity of the material, probe a philological enquiry, and discern a possible Ur-matn that was in circulation in the first half of the second/eighth century. These first five verses ( āyas ) posed a number of problems for early Muslim scholars, and h…
A Version of Ibn Lahīʿa’s Transmission of ʿUrwa ibn al-Zubayr’s “Maghāzī NoteBook”
This article examines one recension of the maghāzī notebook by ʿUrwa ibn al-Zubayr. It introduces an Egyptian branch that was transmitted from Abū l-Aswad by Ibn Lahīʿa. It studies the transmission chain that extends over five generations and offers a detailed investigation of some eight narratives that cover three episodes in the life of Prophet Muḥammad. It also casts considerable light on the development of the early maghāzī tradition and its …
The Serpent Queen
The article studies the adaptation of the popular tale of “Ḥāsib Karīm al-Dīn and the Queen of Serpents” from The Thousand and One Nights as a hypotext in the work of the contemporary Egyptian novelist and poet Badr al-Dīb (1926–2005). In folklore and religion, the serpent as a complex mythical symbol is perceived as a primordial being and is linked with wisdom and cosmic power. The snake-woman is the embodiment of the world-generating, life-givi…

Al-Manṣūr bi-Llāh’s controversy with Twelver Šīʿites concerning the occultation of the Imam in his Kitāb al-ʿIqd al-ṯamīn
This article tackles one of the main points of dissension between the Zaydiyya and the Imāmiyya, notably, the repudiation of the former to the chiliastic concept of the occultation of the Imam ( ġayba ). It will address the exchange of polemics between both groups, which goes back to the 3rd/9th century. Its main focus, however, is the refutation conjured by the Yemeni Imam al-Manṣūr bi-Llāh ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥamza (d. 614/1217)
The Transmission and Dynamics of the Textual Sources of Islam
For many Muslims, the textual sources of Islam provide the guiding principles on which they base their beliefs. These texts have also been studied by Western scholars of Islam for centuries. Most of their work has focussed on the historicity of the texts, often at the expense of the study of Muslims' highly diverse interpretation and application of these sources in everyday life. This volume provides new insights into the transmission of these so…
