  • The Role of Symbolic Capital in Protest

    Nicole F Watts•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies of South Asia…•2012•Citada por: 5•Referências: 4

This essay examines state-society relations in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq through a case study of the March 2006 protest in Halabja, during which protesters destroyed a memorial built to honor the victims of the 1988 chemical bombing of the city. The article suggests that contradictions between word and deed fueled local perceptions that the Kurdistan Regional Government was exploiting Halabja’s symbolic and material legacy. The essay’…

  • Toward Kurdish Distinctiveness in Electoral Politics

    Open Access•Gilles Dorronsoro, Nicole F Watts•ARTICLE•International Journal Middle East…•2009•Citada por: 6•Referências: 11

In December 1977 an independent candidate named Mehdi Zana was elected mayor of Diyarbakır, one of the biggest cities in Turkey's southeastern region. His election was a striking event, upsetting the troika of class, party, and state that had maintained a tight hold over the local political apparatus in Diyarbakır since the 1940s. Unlike most prior mayors of Diyarbakır, Zana did not come from a prominent family of local notables but was a working…

  • Re-Considering State-Society Dynamics in Turkey's Kurdish Southeast

    Open Access•Nicole F Watts•ARTICLE•European journal of Turkish studies•2009•Citada por: 3•Referências: 26

State-society relations in Turkey's Kurdish southeast have long been characterized as pitting a powerful and determined state against a reluctant, resistant, but largely overwhelmed population. Such an image of a binary, state versus society relationship is readily substantiated by a myriad historical and contemporary examples: multiple Kurdish rebellions against the central state, cultural and political dissent articulated from poetry to politic…

  • Activists in office

    Nicole F Watts•ARTICLE•Ethnopolitics•2006•Citada por: 25•Referências: 25

This paper contends that in some semi-democratic regimes the participation in electoral politics of ethnopolitical activists does not end overt conflict between the state and challengers. Instead, this activity, here called ‘representative contention’, in some cases constitutes an important form of social movement activism and can help explain how movements in semi-democratic regimes survive, consolidate and advance their agendas. As an example, …

According to the deputy chief of the General Staff and other Turkish officers, it is hoped eventually to make the Tunçeli [Tunceli] region into a “second Switzerland,” as it is extremely beautiful. It appears to me, however, that its inaccessibility and the difficulties which visitors experience while travelling in Turkey will be considerable obstacles to the realisation of this dream.A. Ross, Military attaché to the British representative in Tur…

  • Allies and Enemies

    Open Access•Nicole F Watts•ARTICLE•International Journal Middle East…•1999•Citada por: 26•Referências: 16

Preventing the development of an ethnic Kurdish cultural and political movement has been a priority of the Turkish state since the Kurdish-led Shaykh Said Rebellion of 1925.' Nevertheless, beginning around 1959 this effort was steadily if slowly undermined, and events of the past ten years suggest that it has indeed failed. Not only have Kurdish activists gained some measure of international recognition for themselves and for the concept of Kurdi…
