Ripeness theory and the Cyprus conflict: Understanding how comfortable stalemate and external pressure influence conflict resolution
Renewing hope for Cyprus peace: A novel approach to reconcile the negotiation positions of the Turkish Cypriot side and the Greek Cypriot side
Focusing on the achievements and failures of the 2017 Crans-Montana negotiations, this study examines the research question of how and why the last talks failed to resolve the Cyprus issue. It argues that progress in the negotiations was hindered by the enduring mistrust between the community leaders and the inadequacy of their resolve to reach common ground by reconciling their respective differences about the security and guarantees issue. The …
The instrumentalization of post-truth politics in Turkey: The case of the 2023 elections
The global rise of populism has led to efforts to create an 'alternative truth' to support populist political aims. This is recently seen in Turkey in the use of post-truth political discourse by the AKP as a primary election campaign strategy. This study investigates how the AKP used post-truth politics to create an alternative truth about the opposition. The main argument of the article is that the AKP used instrumentalization of post-truth pol…
Yet Another Case of Electoral and Government Epidemic? The Turkish Cypriot Legislative Election of January 2018
Following Bosco and Verney’s analyses of ‘electoral’ and ‘government epidemics’, the 2018 Turkish Cypriot legislative election is examined in the context of the impact of the economic crisis on elections and government formation in southern Europe. Despite its obvious idiosyncrasies as a self-declared state with 335, 000 inhabitants, in the last decade of economic crisis and austerity policies, the Turkish Cypriot case has followed a largely simi…
A Paradigm Shift in Turkish Foreign Policy: Transition and Challenges
This study sets out to explain the general characteristics of current Turkish foreign policy where it examines the interplay between important world events and emergent novel ideas at four different levels of analysis (conceptual setting, micro-setting, domestic macro-setting, and external macro-setting). The new Turkish foreign policy vision and its normative strategy, derived from Davuto[gbreve] lu’s Strategic Depth, have been blended with five…
The Turkish Cypriot Legislative Election of April 2009: Towards the ‘Last Roll of the Dice’ in the Cyprus Conflict
On 19 April 2009, the Turkish Cypriots voted for a new legislature. The election outcome is important in understanding political trends in northern Cyprus before the April 2010 Presidential election, which will be significant for the current peace negotiations. The latter are considered by many observers as the last roll of the dice in terms of attempts to resolve the Cyprus conflict. The comeback of the old guard UBP is considered as the normali…

The Turkish Cypriot Legislative Election of February 2005: The Rise of CTP/BG
In the 24 April 2004 referenda on the Cyprus peace plan, 65% of the Turkish Cypriots voted Yes while 76% Greek Cypriots voted No. Subsequently, the international community has failed to end the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots as it promised in the pre-referenda period. It was against this background that on 20 February 2005 the Turkish Cypriot electorate went to the polls in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus's eighth legislative election.…

Negotiating a Resolution to the Cyprus Problem: Is Potential European Union Membership a Blessing or a Curse
This article provides a game theoretic analysis of how the candidacy of Cyprus for European Union (EU) membership presents an important challenge for both the Union's eastern enlargement plans and current international efforts aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem. The conclusions indicate that the Cypriot conflict has entered a very delicate period in its protracted and troublesome history characterized by a deadlock game. Strong domestic and in…
